I am starting to get depressed about my dog...
I am having a baby in 27 days but I am getting so depressed about how much my relationship will change with my 1st baby, my BT. I know it will be a great thing after the birth of my baby but I am still getting a little upset. I won't be able to give him as much attention. He is so spoiled.
I just had to share

they're really intuitive, don't be sad...dogs feel like they are part of a pack, and when there's a new member in the pack, they usually take on a new role too....he'll probably start sleeping near where the baby sleeps to watch over it....he'll be protective over it...

Re: I am starting to get depressed about my dog...
I totally understand what you are saying! I am pregnant too and feel the same way. Everyone says to me, I don't know what you are going to do when the baby is born b/c she is so attached to me, as I am to her.
I do get worried about what will happen, I just don't want her to feel ignored, or feel abandoned all of a sudden b/c right now she gets all my time.
I am sure it will all work out!!!

Re: I am starting to get depressed about my dog...
OMG! My DH and I have been talking about this for days I don't want things to change too much, but I know it will. For instance, every morning I get up and lay on the floor with her and we cuddle on the floor for about 15 minutes every morning (she is not allowed in the bed). I know after the baby is born, I will not be able to do this - so I was asking DH will he lay with her.

Aww, but now your dog will have someone who wants to play 24-7. They'll be so cute together.

Re: I am starting to get depressed about my dog...
Oh Lord I am so glad this has been posted. I am due in Sept and I tell this to my husband all the time and he thinks i am nuts! I have had my dog since he was born and he was like my first born. Question for you ladies having a baby how are you trying to break in your dog about sharing your time and having a baby around?

don't woory eveything will work out. Most likely the dog will become attached and want to be near baby and you.... And once your baby can crwl and walk, they'll be best friends!!!!

I have been spending the same amount of time with him. I just can't stop giving him so much attention.
The one thing we did do was put up all of the babies "stuff". IE: swing, pack-n-play. So he will get used to it all. And then we play the musical toys a lot so he get's used to the noises.

i think i will start this now. I also wanted to get one of those dolls that cry to get him use to hearing a baby around.

I am afraid of what Peanut will do when DH and I start having children. She flips out when DH touches me!! She is soooo overprotective of me and I truly hope she understands what attention a baby needs and deserves!

I worry about this all the time when out twins will be born. It will be very different for Tiger, but I think in the long run, he will love them, and be very protective of them

I feel the same way about Dixie. We have the baby's stuff around the house, too.

Re: I am starting to get depressed about my dog...
Unfortunately the relationship with your pet DOES change to a degree. The baby's needs come 1st and foremost and sadly, my pets position in the food chain has moved. It's baby 1st, hubby next, dogs third, cat 4th and fish last. Not ideal but it has to be. Those who are more self suffient have to fend for themselves I also get VERY defensive if the dogs try to crowd the baby or get too rough while playing, etc. One of my BT's I'm very on guard around because she is short fused and I'm not taking any chances. If I see the slightest hint of aggression or jealously from her towards the baby, she is out of here. Especially with all the dog maulings lately, the last thing I need is my child permanently scarred by what I should consider a member of my family. Yes, I still love them all but you will see how your patience will shorten and your tolerance of some of the things they do now will be different once your REAL baby comes into your life.

That is somewhat true...one of my BT's is the baby's best friend. Is very tolerant of the baby laying on her, grabbing her, kissing her, playing with her to the point of exhaustion. She is always checking on the baby, looking in on her, etc. My mother's little helper. The other Boston though I can tell has an "issue" with the baby and that's what I need to keep an eagle eye on. She never "accepted' the baby. The cat could care either way.

Re: I am starting to get depressed about my dog...
don't worry dogs adjust well - they love kids - kkids are great at sharing the cheerios -
my parents dog when they had their first child helped out- it was a shepard and would heard my brother whenever he would walk to far a way from my mom by nipping at his heels and barking
