I ate something really bad!

I eat fish like once a week or less. We usually buy salmon or cod fish. I never buy anything weird. My in laws had us over for dinner last weekend and made fish. I didn't think anything of it until I realized after I ate it that it was swordfish! I went into complete panic! Dh and I figured it out that it was between 4-5 ounces. I couldn't sleep. And I couldn't type it out until now for support! Googling obviously didn't help much. I haven't had any fish since and I don't plan on it for a while if at all. Any one else ever do something like this? This is my third pregnancy and I'm usually totally relaxed. But this is the one thing that freaked me out. I know everything in moderation, and all fish has mercury, but why is it that it's completely off the table during pregnancy?

Re: I ate something really bad!

I think one serving through your whole pregnancy will be ok.

They say to avoid it completely because it does have higher levels of mercury than other fish, and if they don't say AVOID COMPLETELY you know there are people who will eat it every week or every month etc.
They tend to err on the side of caution when telling you to never eat things during pregnancy - because there are people out there with zero common sense.

But one serving, and never again, I really think won't do any harm.

Ask your OB for peace of mind, and maybe skip fish complety for the next few weeks to avoid any more mercury, but I really think it will be ok!

I ate something really bad!

I have had two separate OB's and honestly the only things they both told me to avoid were smoking and drugs.
I agree with Nell...you can call your OB for peace of mind, but I doubt one serving is going to harm your baby.

I wouldn't worry. One serving one time during your pregnancy is OK. My OB told me everything in moderation. The only thing she said no to was smoking.

You're fine. Your baby is fine.

You had ONE serving of fish with higher mercury levels. My doctor said tuna, swordfish, etc was ok once in a while. Did not say to avoid it. I definitely ate it a few times with both pregnancies, and both my kids are a-ok.

Don't beat yourself up over fish.

Thanks everyone!

Thanks I needed to hear real stories of people eating it too. My logical side kept saying I'm fine, but then my irrational thoughts kept popping into my head. It's on my drs no list so I'm glad to hear other drs in this area dont have it on the list as a complete no.

One serving will be just fine. Do you know how many cold cut sandwiches I inhaled? Oh and that nitrate thing... well I ate a bacon egg and cheese daily for the first 12 weeks it’s all I could stomach. Aside from one of my kids sniffing his toys all day long... they are normal!

Re: I ate something really bad!

I eat cold cuts sometimes and canned tuna whenever I feel like it. My doctor doesn't have a lot of things on his no list. Swordfish was never mentioned to me to avoid completely.

I get worried because I know cold cuts are supposed to be a no-no. But with all the fruit and vegetable recalls for listeria, my once-in-a-while turkey sandwich just doesn't seem so dangerous and these pregnancy cravings just don't go away lol. My first kid is 100% perfect, so I feel like it's ok.

I have a co-worked that laughed at me once (when I was worried about some potato salad I ate at a work BBQ) because she used to do hard drugs (crystal meth) and only quit because she found out she was pregnant. She still smoked pot once in a while throughout her pregnancy and drank occasionally. Her son is seriously a genius and was just accepted into an ivy league school.

For some reason, hearing that made me feel better. Like if a fetus can withstand crystal meth, my occasional tuna and turkey should be fine right? I'm sure your one serving of swordfish is perfectly fine and it has a ton of protein, so that's actually beneficial.
