I called the attorney general today
about gas prices and they thanked me and asked me to tell other people to call.
Yesterday I needed gas and 2 stations across the street from each other both said 3.69, so I pulled into 1 and after I started pumping realized I was being charged 3.77, apparantly 3.69 was for cash only, and I was paying with a credit card.
I remembered seeing this scam on the news so I looked it up when I got home and saw a phone number to file a complaint. They have a special line just about gas prices. I left a message and they called me back today.
So I gave her the info, and she said they would contact me about restitution. I could care less about the 80 cents, but I was pizzedd about being deceived. I asked her if this is something I should be calling about and she said absolutely, she was really nice and said she tells everyone she meets on the subway to call for this scam and also to call if you see a price change drastically from one day to the next.
So this is the number I called 1-800-996-4630 . If it happens to you, or you see this, call them.
if you want to read more here is a website about it
gas fraud and price gauging

Re: I called the attorney general today
Where I live, two gas stations 8 miles apart have a price difference of almost $0.30!
Needless to say, I always get gas at work!

That is a totally different scenario, though. Price differences can usually be attributed to differences in rent, franchise fees, etc. Some locations just cost more to be in than others.
The issue is about advertising 3.69, then charging 3.77. That's not allowed.

Re: I called the attorney general today
I noticed in our neighborhood the full service stations are charging more for c/c over cash. They post the cash price on the big street sign. But they list both prices at the pump.
I'm not too sure, but I thought they needed to post the higher price on the street sign.

They are allowed, but it has to be advertised and both prices have to be listed at the pump.

Re: I called the attorney general today
There is a station by me that has the lower prices on the Big sign, you go to the pump and there are 2 prices listed...a difference of .10.. I don't use that station, but, is this what you are talking about? Should I call?

I think she means if only the cash price is listed, but you use a credit card and they charge you more (which is not listed).

Re: I called the attorney general today
they can post the lowest price whether it is cash or credit as long as the other price is posted at the pump.
So if the $3.69 got you to go to thier gas station, then they win.
As long as both the cash and credit price is posted at the pump, they can put the lower price on the sign at the street.

that is not what she said at all. In fact its the street view sign that they were talking about being fraudulent. They cant post the lower cash only price on the street view sign.
So for the previous posters who asked, yes, if the street sign says one price and then there is a different price at the pump for credit, you should call!

Re: I called the attorney general today
from the article I read, its the street sign that they cannot post the cheaper price for cash to lure you in!
yes they can discount for cash paying customers but listed at the pump only not the big lighted sign to bring you in.
I should call on the BP on the corner of larkfield and pulaski rd in east northport- they have bright the low price with a little sign that you cant see especially at night that says cash only- that is BS too!!!!!

Re: I called the attorney general today
The street sign can post the cash only price if the street sign says CASH on it.
Usually the CASH is so tiny you can't read the damm thing.
