I cannot believe my school taxes went up almost $2,000
I was looking at my mortgage statement and saw that starting in April my monthly payment is going to be going up so I called my mortgage co. and our school taxes went up. I live in Merrick and my taxes are now over $10,000 a year. This is insane!!!! I know we can't grieve the school taxes, but I am looking to try and get maybe a deduction on my property taxes than. Who have you used to grieve taxes? What kinds of questions/complaints do they ask for?

Re: I cannot believe my school taxes went up almost $2,000
We just bought in Merrick and as of 1/1/07 our taxes went up $2K as well! I was so upset when our lawyer told us.
ETA: I am pretty sure that if the house assesses or appraises for more than what you bought the house for you can grieve them. But I am curious of how exactly that works. I wonder how long after you grieve does it go into effect?

I can't wait to grieve them, but I think it's too late for this year.
I just called a tax grievance attorney I was referred to. We have until March 1st to grieve them so make sure you do. FM if you would like his name and number.

nassau county just reassesed every house, you were probably paying too little before and now its evened out. I would defnitely check to make sure your house was assessed appropriately though! If it is over assessed, you can grieve the taxes, but if it is properly asseessed you won't be able to.
Hopefully Spitzer's plan will go through and tax breaks will be coming in the next few years!

What happens if your house is assessed for less than you payed for it? I am not sure if that is the case, just wondering.
