i could really use some advice? (warning its long!)
So i was at work lastnight i work 7p-7a at a nursing home. Its not a very strenuous job but it does require me to be on my feet walking around for most of the night. sometimes running or rushing if theres an emergency.
Anyway to make a long story short. i woke up yesterday morning around 10am with a dull cramp on my lower left side i ignored it as just being growing pains. I had one time of little spotting and again blew it off as no big thing... Fast forward to midnight and im in tears because the dull pain is now getting stronger and has not gone away all day. No bleeding just cramping/pain. So i call the emergency # at ob office speak to DR. he says good idea to go to ER... so i argue with my supervisor i finally get to go home i take the hour drive to er spend the whole night there with DH to find out everything seems to be fine but they are caling it a Threatened Abortion (just those words FREAK ME OUT!)
im supposed to go to work tomorrow night then be off sat. and sunday. The dr wrote me a note to be out for a whole week. But my issue is that ive only been there about 3 months. i dont have any sick time. so i wont be getting paid. I dont want to be labeled as THAT GIRL THAT KEEPS LEAVING EARLY AND CALLING IN SICK. but obviously my health and the baby come first. Dh said if im feeling better maybe i should just go to work but its up to me.
So after that whole big long story that i tried to cut short.. Would you call in tomorrow even if your feeling better just to be on the safe side. or would you try and stick it out knowing your off sat and sunday? PLEASE HELP!!!!

CALL IN SICK! Your health and the health of the baby come first. Plus you have a doctor's note- it would be a little discriminatory to fire you for being out or even hold it against you!

My husband has said the same exact thing that they really cant fire you and if they do its discrimination. considering the dr. note says PREGNACY COMPLICATIONS!

Definitely do not go in. If your doctor gave you the note to miss work, then you should use it. Yours and babys health is definitely most important.

I totally agree 100%.. to be honest who really cares what they think? You have a valid reason to be out.. no one should have anything to say about it either!

I had the SAME THING HAPPEN last year. I never ever called in sick to work. In fact, I used that as a "selling point" on interviews! I took a new job in Sept 07 (where I am now) and had to use ALL of my sick time in 2008 due to various ailments. Not colds or viruses or anything - I'm talking WEIRD things, like hives all over my body, eyes swollen shut, things like that. Luckily, I have the most caring boss ever - he's all about family and I'm just so glad I'm there.

I definately would call in & explain you have a Dr's note stating you should be off your feet for a week. The health of yourself & the baby is much more important plus i am sure that they would understand especially with a Dr's note.

Say home & rest! I understand that you hate calling in (I'm the same way), but your health & baby's health are much more important.

thanks so much ladies i know our health comes first absolutely.. but this job doesnt seem to be the most family friendly nore the most accommodating which is very frustrating being a new mom-to-be. (dont get me wrong certain supervisors are really fantastic but its the big wigs i worry about!)

Re: i could really use some advice? (warning its long!)
First off I hope you are feeling better. I too am a nurse and work 7p - 7 a on the floor in a hospital. Your job is not easy and as much as you say you can take i easy you dont know what your nite is gonna hold. This is a very precious time in your pregnancy and things are still forming and attaching. Time with out pay i know is extremely hard ( i had to go out early on bedrest and looking at doing almost 2 months unpaid) so i understand.... but in the end you have to remember your SAFTEY and BABY come first. Call in sick!! they cant fire you, you have a note. Yes you might feel well enough to go to work but you are also home resting right now and when you are on your feet it comes back. I know i have been there. The threaten abortion title.. that is normal routine discharge instructions because we are under the 20 week mark. Dont look into it. I had the same thing handed to me and i freaked out because i did MC my first. Feel better and please relax and drink a lot of water.

I know this is hard. YOu have to remember they only care about themselves and their tasks that they need to get done for THEM. I have never called in at work and when i got pregnant i was pushing my self to hard and started having more and more complications including preterm labor that thankfully was able to be stopped. Think of it this way.. what good will you be to them and your patients if you arent there mentally because you know you wont be because you will be thinking about the what if. Please call in sick it is the best thing you can do. Docs know best.

20 hours of notice.. u and I both know that is more than some employees give prior to their shift and im sure they will appreciate that. You are doing the right thing and dont be like me and stay home and feel guilty over it. This is for you and your baby! My DH doesnt understand my job either .. the TV makes far more easier than it really is. Working in a nursing home isnt easy either considering they depend on you ALOT for the needs.

If your doc told you to stay home, YOU STAY HOME! PERIOD! No job, NOTHING, NOTHING is worth risking your health or the health of the baby. Bottom line. Feel better

Re: i could really use some advice? (warning its long!)
Honestly, with nursing- you NEVER know what you're walking into. I used to be SO strict on myself about not calling in sick in every job i've had... but now being PG and on a unit that's so unpredicatable and so demanding- i have no problem calling out when it's necessary. Sorry, it's just not worth mine or my baby's health. I would have to keep reminding myself though, that eventhough you're feeling better than the last couple of days- doesn't mean you're completely in the clear- give yourself time to get back to where you need to be.
