I dont know how to drive!! Any Driving School Recs in Queens..

I am going to be 30 years old and I dont know how to drive. I have a horrible fear..anxiety about doing it.

I want to have kids.. I want to live on LI.. Not being able to drive holds me back in so many ways. I am terrified but know that I MUST take some steps to be able to drive.

So with that being said, Can anyone recommend a driving school or even a specific person that i can take lessons from at a driving school.

I need an instructor that is patient and understanding..When I was about 20 I took one lesson and the Instructor was so mean to me that I never did it again... I'm at a loss and just the IDEA of driving makes me want to vomit so any suggestions are appreciated..

No advice but I just wanted to say hello and I know how you feel. I used to drive all over the place but I got into a (small) accident in 2004 and lost my mojo. I want and need to take lessons. Good luck!

OMG, I could have written your post word for word.

Except I am now 36, have 2 kids and not being able to drive is the worst!!!Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm petrified. I took lessons way back in my early 20s with an awful instructor and I can't shake my fear.

Good luck finding someone! It really does make it so much harder now with 2 kids.

I'm in Queens too. if you find someone please FM me the info and i will do the same!

I was in the same boat. I don't know where in Queens you are, but I used Ferrari & A-Club (I think A club is a small family shop). I took and passed my road test at 32 and finally became comfortable last year when we got our new car. Now I take my 2 kids all over LI w/o giving it a second thought.

It's the instructor to get you past the road test, and then just driving on your own with no one else in the car (once you have your license, of course) that give you confidence. For me, a different car helped as well. We have a crossover, and I'm much more comfortable (I feel like I can see more) than I was in a 4-door sedan.

Good luck!

I remember when I learned my mom took me to an empty parking lot just to get comfortable. Can your DH do that with you?

Im in the same boat. I will be 30 in December, and really got to learn to drive. Plus, having a 2 year old I would love to take him out without waiting on DH. But, I am terrified! Chat Icon

I learned how to drive from Ferrari years ago. I liked the instructor.

I recommend Drive-A-Rama in Ridgewood. The owner, Joanne, is very nice. They taught my sister how to drive and her anxiety is through the roof.

When I was 22 I took a driving class, got my license and never drove again for years after that. Chat Icon Chat Icon

It's only now at 27 that I am finally starting to really get myself out there. I still have terrible anxiety about driving. I am also so worried that I am going to hurt myself or someone else or wreak the car.

I have 2 DS and living on LI its like a MUST to be able to drive. My poor DH would have to take half days of work to bring me (us ) here or there. Sure it's half a day but it was hurting his pay. Then there are days when I just want to take the boys out and I can't because I am limited to where I can go by walking. I never make it to GTG because I can't drive that far.

I can drive locally. Extreme local. I haven't ever been on a highway and honestly really don't want to be. Its so scary. I stress thinking about it.

Good luck. You can do it. I am a big chicken but since making myself drive locally I have gotten a bit more comfortable in the car. It takes time.

I second this! I used them years ago and had such a great experience. I had the guy too, but can't remember his name. So professional, sweet, and patient! Chat Icon

I order groceries from Peapod or Fresh Direct.

If I am alone I can never do anything with the kids unless I am brave enough to take the double stroller on the train and hope that someone helps me carry it down the stairs.Chat Icon

I find it so debilitating! Thank you so much for posting this so I can get my butt in gear and get lessons!

Re: I dont know how to drive!! Any Driving School Recs in Queens..

No recommendations as I am in LI, but I am on the same situation too. Lived in the city before but moved to LI a little over 4 years ago. Took road test in 2008 and failed horribly as I was not prepared enough. So definitely get recommendations and make sure you are comfortable with the person that is teaching you and that the person is sure that you are ready before scheduling your road test. I was very uncomfortable with my last experience but finally decided to give it a go again...I am happier now with my current instructor, and only now I can finally say that I am comfortable in the car, and will schedule my road test soon. I have two kids, one is 23 months, the other one is 14, so it is really hard to depend on DH for everything.

Good luck, hope you find a good instructor!
