I dont know what to do anymore
My 3.5 month old son has acid reflux. He was in the hospital 3 weeks ago because it came up out of his nose and he couldnt breathe and he was turning blue. Now my ped wanted me to thicken the formula with rice and that didnt help. I went to a ped. gastro and he said thicken it with oatmeal, and this is still not helping. He is on zantac and it just keeps coming out of his mouth and nose and he has a hard time breathing when it happens and sometimes he will cry for 30 - 40 minutes after it happens. I am going crazy. I dont sleep because I am afraid of what will happen. I dont know what to do. What helped your baby with acid reflux? are there any test he can take so they can see whats going on and help it better?

Re: I dont know what to do anymore
My DDs were on Zantac 2x a day- when they upped their dosage to 1 ml and take it 3x a day they were so much better - I can immediately lay them down after eating without any problems. What dosage is he on?

You may need Prevacid. It works differently than Zantac and is usually more effective when Zantac is not working.

Definitely try a new med-my friend has twins and one of them had the reflux you are talking about-you should FM her TwinMama. If you can position him on his left side that is supposed to help because the stomach naturally opens to the left. Good luck

Re: I dont know what to do anymore
Definitely keep the baby sitting up after feeding for atleast 15 mins or more. I would try another medicine, we used Axid and it worked well.

Re: I dont know what to do anymore
please fm me. i went thru this with my daughter. who is your gastro? first, check out www.infantreflux.org. a great website with a chat board just like this. so helpful.
second, did your dc have a 24 hr ph probe done? i highly recommend this, even thought it is an intrusive procedure.
also, let your dc sleep as upright as possible. small feeding more frequesntly will also help.
i KNOW what you are going thru. if i can help, please let me know.
etd to say that zantac is weight sensitive. it may not be the right dosage for your dc's weight.

Re: I dont know what to do anymore
Thank you everyone. We had to bring him back to the er yesterday and they had him stay overnight. My poor baby, they gave him an ultrasound of the stomach and didnt find anything. They took blood work and they put in an iv for fluids.
What is the 24 hour ph test? He is now on 1 ml of zantac. I always have him sleep in the swing, he loves it

Re: I dont know what to do anymore
DD had a similar problem - never turned blue, but definitely stopped breating and was flailing. With her, Zantac actually made her WORSE. We switched to a new Gastro group who put her on Axid and it is SOOOOO much better now.
FM if you want the Gastro's info or want to vent - I know how scary it can be - don't worry - it will get better

DS stopped breathing also.... It was the worst thing ever. They put him on axid. I didn't sleep either. Putting him to bed in the swing helped. Maybe you could try the podee bottle... Keep in mind that AR is the worst at this age.... OH, Try giving DS oatmeal from the spoon, thick. It will get better, don't worry.

My DDs would do this too - we called them "episodes." It was so heartbreaking and scary to watch. I am so glad the Zantac has helped them.
Christine - any updates?
