I feel like I was put to the test and failed
DS got hives from head to toe tonight. I called the dr immediately. Of course I have no Benadryl in the house (the first reason why I feel like I failed) and I had to call my mom who luckily lives only a few minutes away so that she can get me some. I, of course had to call DH at work and was in hysterics. He's in NYC and can't do anything for me or DS and I should have waited before I called him (he works on live TV), but I didn't and got him upset as well.
I feel like I failed my child. It was the first time that I seriously thought something was wrong and I went to pieces. What am I going to do when he gets hurt and we have to take him to the ER?
I'm writing this in tears because I feel like an idiot who can't handle anything.
DS is sound asleep. Snoring!! (I'm assuming because of the Benadryl) and I'm watching him as I type on the video camera.
I know that there won't be much sleep in this house tonight for me or DH. It's the first time I gave DS Benadryl and they told us to monitor him.
Thanks for listening.

You did NOTHING wrong. Your DS is safe & sleeping peacefully. It's ok to not know what to do ALL the time. You did fine. Relax. You're a Mommy, we all have our moments.

Re: I feel like I was put to the test and failed
awwwww, you didn't fail!!! He survived it. You survived it. Sounds like a job well done to me. Look, we can all recount stories like this where looking back we probably could have done something different. Look at it like an opportunity to reflect and correct for next time.
In terms of calling DH, I probably would have done the same thing. Just a natural reaction. I assume this is your first. How the heck should we know what to do...until we have to do it.
Anyway, don't beat yourself up. You're a great mom!!!

Its okay.. first time mommy! My dd had a reaction to oatmeal and I had no benadryl either. I didnt know what to do, so i put hydrocortizone cream on her face. It seemed to work.. then i went and bought bendaryl. We learn as we go.

Ugh- I hear you and totally undertsand. The first time we gave DD dairy (yogurt) her whole face blew up into hives. It was pretty dramatic- her tongue swelled and everything. Did I have Benedryl in the house...... NOPE!
I also fell apart. Thank God the voice of reason (DH) was home to take control of the situation.
Don't feel bad at all. We've all been there.
What caused the hives?

BTW- you did not fall to pieces. You had the presence of mind to call the PED, and then your mom. You did a VERY good job.
