i had a "consequences to sex" talk with my son
yes! yes, i did!
on sunday afternoon, i was watching 20/20 on We. it was about open adoption. a teenage girl got pregnant, had decided to give the baby up for adoption, and wanted it to be an open adoption.
my son was sitting in the family room with me doing his homework. towards the end of the show, my son made a comment about why was she giving her baby away. INSIDE, I HAD A MINI HEART ATTACK, but i calmly mentioned how she wasn't ready to raise the baby because she was only 16.
this lead to us talking about the consequences of sex and how you have to wait until you're old/mature enough to deal with them.
all the while, i thought i was going to be struck by lightning and FRY!!!
i was so pleasantly surprised at how cool, calm, and collected my little man was about the whole thing!!
he's growing up before my eyes!

Re: i had a "consequences to sex" talk with my son
i have to say i lucked out.... dd religion teacher brought up how you need to stay pure till you are married, that night she went to sleep at my mom's and told my mom and step dad what they talked about and well that opened the doors for them top talk to her about it at first i was a little upset about it, thinking it should have been me that did it. but i know it was alot better coming from my step dad knowing because of kryssy's understanding of the world he would get her to understand it alot better then i could.... it was also good because she later came to me and we talked about it too.... i am having a hard time just dealing with the thought of her in high school come sept. and then this kinda talk ... i am sooooo not ready for this .

Re: i had a "consequences to sex" talk with my son
I had "the talk" with DS when he was a few months old. That way, I'm covered, and there's no embarrassing or awkward moments....
j/k, kind of. I did have "the talk", just because I ran out of things to talk about, and I thought it would be funny to mention later on (like now... ). He's only 5, so I have a tiny bit of time yet, but not much..... I talk to him about a lot of serious things, at an almost adult level, so I don't think I'll have a hard time with this topic when it comes up.
DD will be easier.... "NO TALKING TO BOYS UNTIL AFTER COLLEGE!"

How old are your kids that you are talking to about this? i dont know what age is the right age.... My DD is 7 1/2, so i think she is too young, but somewhere around 10-12 i would think- right? or is that too late?

I don't have children yet, but I would think 10 is a good age- DEFINITELY before Middle School.
It's scary that kids are sexually active younger and younger these days.
I heard on the radio this morning that a new form of "courtship" amongst High School students is to send nude pictures adn video of themselves through text messaging. It is more likely to be a girl sending to a guy because girls feel they need to be promiscuous to get a guys attention.
Unfortunately, these girls don't realize that guys may share the pictures with their friends and it may turn up in the wrong hands or on the internet.
I'm TERRIFIED of raising a girl (or even a boy) in this day and age. I don't remember EVER feeling like I had to be promiscuous- I valued modesty and didn't think of sex as such a casual thing.
