I had a meltdown!

Well on Wednesday it happened, I had a meltdown. As you all know I have been battling with Jacob's gas/Acid Reflux/airway obstruction issues and Wednesday was the worst that I have ever seen him. He was crying and awake for 11 hours. But his cry was not a fussy cry it was a painful cry and I did not know how to help him. Chat Icon So i packed up mine and jacob's stuff and headed to my mother in law's at 9 pm (DH was at work) It was either that or I was going to throw myself into oncoming traffic. And when we got there, the crying continued, the sreaming actually... nothing we did helped, and i was sobbing. I was on the verge of taking him to the emergency room. Me and my mother in law were up most of the night with him screaming and then finally at about 3am we changed him and saw that he had a few hard poops in his diaper. He was totally constipated! My poor baby was in such pain. He was able to push out some more semi hard poop and then he fell asleep.

So yesterday I went to a different pediatrician because I am just not happy with my current one and feel that Jacob's needs arent' being taken seriously.

Well the new ped asked if he was on zantac and how much of a dose. When i told him the dose he was like "That's it??? THATS NOTHING! THAT WILL DO ABSOLUTELY NOTHING FOR HIM"... so he upped the dosage and also told me i could give him mylanta up to 4 x a day and he explained everything to me even drew pictures. He said the crap with the ENT and putting him under anesthesia is ******** and totally unneccessary. The problem will resolve itself. His problem now is severe Acid Reflux and he also told me what to do about the formula. He is weaning him off the nutramigen and going to work backwards towards regular similac but he is mixing some soy with some regular formula each day slowly until he is back to reg formula. He said this baby is NOT colic like the other ped said. So all i have to say is that last nite i gave jacob more of a dosage of zantac and a little bit of mylanta and this baby did not cry AT ALL ALL NIGHT.. just to eat. Then right back to sleep.

I am so happy i went to another ped for a second opinion. He was so thorough. He even noticed jacob has a piece of skin on his gums in between where his two front teeth would go and he said "who has a space between their teeth in your family? i said ... "not me, or my husband, i really dont know" He said well after his baby teeth come in but before adult teeth get the piece of skin cut or he will have a space between his two front teeth. Good to know!!! So needless to say, Jacob seems more relieved and I am not so suicidal anymore!!!! I hope this continues... thanks for listening.. Chat Icon

I totally know what you are going through. Zantac did nothing for Miranda and I have been on every diet and we've tried every expensive formula and nothing is working.
She cries with her poops too.
All I can tell you is that it does get better as they grow and the pain goes away.
If you start to feel like the Zantac isn't working then ask for Prevacid or Prilosec. Miranda is on Prevacid and she's much better with that than Zantac.

I have found this website helpful

Reflux

I feel so bad for you and the baby. But wow, what a difference a new ped makes! I'm so glad the new dose of meds seems to be what the baby needed! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I am very happy you went to other doctor. That is so important. Doctors are human and not all doctors are right about their ideas.

Good Luck with the new program. I hope your baby feels much better quickly!!

Re: I had a meltdown!

I am glad he is feeling better and you found a pediatrician that is helping and you are happy with. Always follow your gut. Mommies know their children and you know when something is wrong. I hate when the drs don't take things seriously when your child is obviously suffering or uncomfortable.
