I had my son! Info about Winthrop's new rooming in policy

Hi girls,

Michael Anthony was born on Monday, September 19th at 10:11am. He was 8lbs 6oz and 22.5 inches long! He is beautiful and looks just like his big brother!

Just was released Wednesday from Winthrop so I can fill you in on the new "rooming in" poliicy.

I had a c-section and my doctor just told me about the policy last week. When I had my last c-section they had me up and out of bed pretty fast and I assumed the same this time.

Unfortunately, I got sick from the amnesia and they left the catheder in for 24 hours (I was told this is standard but was not the case last time). I was in no shape at all to keep the baby in my room the first night as I could not move easily. When my husband left at 10, he took the baby down to the nursery no questions asked.

The next day I got the catheder and IV out as quickly as I could, and got myself up and moving. I was in more pain than I remembered last time but was trying to do the best I could. I asked about sending the baby to the nursery again and was encouraged to try to keep him in the room with me, however, should I feel overwhelmed or exhausted to call and they would come take him. As soon as my husband left the baby started crying and I was having a hard time getting up and down fast enough to help him. When the nurse came in at 2:30, she offered to feed him and I asked her to take him for just a few hours so I could sleep. She did that for me, and brought him back about 6. I had him in the room with me from that point on.

Basically, what I was told is that there is a statewide push for all moms to have the baby with them 24/7. The nurses are NOT happy about this and said a lot of patients are complaining. They do encourage you to keep the baby but will take them if needed. Even after the baby is born now, they keep them near you. All of the newborn testing, cleaning, bath, etc, is done right in the recovery room. Baby did not leave without me.

The hospital is also no longer giving away the free gifts from the formula companys. Just a heads up.

Overall I had a great experience with the hospital and staff. I arrived 2.5 hours before my c-section and was close to on schedule. My labor/delivery nurse was very nice and all the help in the OR was great. I LOVED my nurses and PCAs in the maternity ward. They were wonderful and couldn't do enough for you. They are trying their best not to double people up unless absolutely needed which was awesome because I had the room to myself.

Something else I found different from last time (3 years ago) was that there was a major push for me to stay 4 nights with the c-section. I actually left after 2 with my doctors okay and am much happier at home :)

Hope this helps all of you who are delivering at WInthrop... :)

It sounds like you had a really good experience at Winthrop and I've been talking to my IRL preggo friends about their new policy and it is kinda crazy! I am glad that the nurses understand the need for new Moms to get some rest when they need it.

One question...you said that this time you were home after 2 days. Was their push to keep you for the whole 4 days, or to send you home earlier? I am just curious because I will be having another c-section with baby#2 in March and I really feel like I will need the 4 days to rest in the hospital before I have to come home and take care of the house, DD, DH and FIL!

Re: I had my son! Info about Winthrop's new rooming in policy

Congratulations on your new little man!! Thanks for this info as this is so helpful since I will also be having another c-section. I spoke to my OB yesterday and he also said that this was basically a new state-wide mandate and that it is going to be happening at all hospitals.

Glad to hear you had a good experience!

I wanted to go home after two. They were suggesting four. Good luck!
