I had the worst doctor appointment ever (long)

So since I had an anovulatory cycle and AF won't go away, I made a doctor appointment. As most of you know I recently moved down to Nashville and have not set up all my doctors yet, so I found one on line that people seemed to like.

Vandy is one of the top medical schools in the country, so you really can't get away from going to a teaching facility, but I don't mind being seen by students, they have to learn sometime. So I make an appointment for this Saturday, I go, and wait almost two hours to be seen. I get taken in and talk to by two students. I go into how I have been temping for a long time, how I know I had an anovulatory cycle, how I know things have been strange with me the last three cycles, etc. The students were very nice and I liked them a lot.

They leave to go and fill in the doctor, I can hear them talking outside the door about how they could not believe how much I knew about charting, and the female reproductive system. Then the doctor comes in. She sits down and the first thing she says to me is, "So I hear you are OBSESSED with taking your temperature." I said to her, "well if obsession is waking up in the morning, taking my temperature and logging into a computer program, then i guess I am." Then she starts to belittle the vitamins I take, saying they are for gullible people, and I don't need them, etc. I responded to her telling her, I did not care what she thought about my vitamins. I take them under the care of a naturalpathic doctor, and acupuncturist and a regular OBGYN. I told her I am not there for lectures, I am there for her to help me figure out what is going on with my cycles.

So she tells me that I could be a diabetic, have thyroid issues, and the bleeding may cause anemia. She tells me to take birth control pills, which I told her I did not want to take for obvious TTC reasons, and because of some other reasons. She says, "well take them, or bleed forever, what do you want me to tell you?" And leaves the room!

The students looked horrified. So they take my blood which took a while because they could not get my veins to work. Again, i did not mind since they were students. And the are running the blood tests to check for the above problems. They also gave me the BC pills which i threw out as soon as I left.

So it was a total waste of a Saturday, and a doctor appointment. I am just so sad and upset I had to get it off my chest. Thanks for reading my long winded post.

ok that dr. is a piece of sh*t..i m just lurking so i have no ttc knowldge but ***!!! get a new dr, please!!!!

I cannot believe that doctor treated you that way. Is she a solo practice or a part of a group? If part of a group, I would in no uncertain terms let her employer know what kind of person this "doctor" is. Frankly, I would write a letter to the licensing board too. She has some nerve. I would also look for another doctor ASAP. Perhaps your old obgyn might have a referral.

oh wow! It sounds like that that doctor knows nothing about ttc and has no clue what hes talking about! Find a new doctor asap!! Im so sorry that u had to go through that!

She is part of a group and I am in the process of filing a complaint. I am trying to find a new doctor now. Unfortunately, my old doctor is not in Tennessee so he won't have any referrals for the area.

I just could not believe the stuff that was coming out of her mouth, and she was wrong about things too. I kept telling her that my LP varies more than it should, and she kept saying that when I get my period all depends on when i ovulate. I told her I understood that part, but an LP is from the day you ovulate till the first day of your period and that should NOT vary as much as mine does. And she kept insisting that it all depends on when you ovulate and that can vary 4 or 5 days a month. I just gave up at that point.

Im so sorry the dr treated you like that!! i temp also, so i guess i'm obsessed with taking my temp too then???? i can't believe how rude she was!
if she wasn't the head dr of the practice i would definitely call and complian. i can't believe she said u *may* have all those conditions w/o even doing any tests! i think shes obsessed with being the worst dr EVER!!

omg, what a Biotch! I would definitely file a complaint. I am so sorry that you had to deal with that. Call your provider and complain and see if they can refer someone.

Im sorry you had an experience like that. It sounds awful. The doctor was so rude and unprofessional and how in-compassionate. She should have been happy to have a patient who is so informed. I really hope your complaint is taken seriously and you find a good doctor to get the answers you are looking for. Good luck.

What a horrible experience and a horrible doctor! I am glad you are filing a complaint. She sounds VERY unprofessional, to say the least. I am sorry you had to go through this on top of everything.

Please tell me that was not an OB-what an @ss! I am so sorry you had to deal with that! I would have taken those pills and shoved them very far up her butt! Call the hospital she is affiliated with and lodge a complaint.

Here's my two cents-this is what I am doing in Boca since I can't convince my NY OB to move-ask local mommies, especially those with newborns for referrals-I noticed that many are very approachable and nice and will tell you all about their doctor and their experience. Then make appointments with a few and decide who seems to have knowledge and a bedside manner.

ETA: I didn't realize that Dr. was a woman! You would think a woman would be more sensitive! Guess not!

Thank goodness you know as much as you do-I can only imagine how misleading that would have been for women that know less.

Is there anyone you can complain to? That is just ridiculous! SO unprofessional! And the medical profession wonders why people are trying to take their health else where or take care of themselves! I am SO sorry you had to deal with a person like that! Just disgusting! I would seriously consider finding someone in that building who is in charge of that horrendous "doctor"!

I think that sometimes doctors don't respond well when we know MORE than what they think we should.. KWIM?

Definitely go to another doctor who will take you more seriously and understand that all of your concerns are valid.. and who will give you the time and respect that you deserve!

i give you alot of credit for not walking out of the place... how unprofessional this doctor is..

Thanks ladies for all the support.

I am in the process of finding a new doctor, and I think I found a couple that I like. The best Gynecologist I ever had was a male, so I think that is what I want to go back to.

The whole thing depressed me, so I can't wait to go back to a good doctor.

I am so sorry that your experiance was bad. I dont understand how any dr can treat any patient like this.
