I hate bath time - HELP!
I can handle almost every other part of being a new mom... but bath time... I hate it. I need tips. She's 8 weeks old now and I have 2 bathtubs... one is the Fisher Price blue one with the hammock, the other is a fold away one - she always gets her foot caught in the grooves in that one, so I went back to the Fisher Price one.
One - I always feel like I'm hurting her b/c she's so slippery and I'm terrified of her getting hurt or drowning... Second, I seem to need help and can't do it alone - especially washing her hair and her back. Our sink is catty corner in our kitchen and DH and I cannot both fit in there, so I get very frustrated. Tonight I got some water her ears trying to avoid getting shampoo in her face/eyes. DH told me she's going to get an ear infection b/c she got water in her ear. I don't get how that hammock is supposed to work at this point, she's over 10 pounds so I only have it connected at one end like the directions say to so that she has the pillow, but when she sits up in the tub her head is above the pillow and she's so upright that it's hard to pour water on her head without getting water in her face/ears. I leaned her back but to do that I only had one hand to pour the water rather than to use the other hand to cover her ears.
After giving a bath I get nauscious!!! It's so bad, I can't believe I'm confessing to this on here but - I've only been giving her a bath once a week - and she tends to sweat when she cries so she probably needs it more often. I know I s*ck at it and I can't stand the possibilty of hurting her. I think she senses my tension b/c she screams like crazy. I always end up yelling at DH too b/c of my frustration - he hates bath time too now, so I've managed to ruin it for the 3 of us.
I need help with this!!!

Re: I hate bath time - HELP!
Water in her ears isn't going to give her an ear infection and water in her eyes isn't going to traumatize her for life. I never used the sling, it was too complicated nor did I use the pillow. I just layed in on the incline and bathed her quickly. If you feel it's too hard, you can lay a towel down. She's not going to slip or drown since you are holding her so I wouldn't worry about that. I would recommend getting the Huggies washcloths with soap already in them so it's one less thing you have to do and makes things a little quicker. It gets better!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. DH had me nuts. She's getting her first round of vaccinations tomorrow and I'm thinking I've now made her sick with an ear infection to come. Men!

You can get soap in her face and in her ears. You do it when you shower, right? She's just like you! I always put the baby tub in our bathtub and gave her a bath in there...I found I had more room so it was easier to do it that way. And try not to stress!! She can sense it and it will bother her, so try your best not to let it show. Try to make it fun of her...sing a song, tickle her, something to take her mind off of the bath being given.

I was going to say the same thing! Just make sure she doesn't ingest any of the soap and/or water and you will be just fine. I also always put the tub inside my big tub. I don't have a lot of counter space anywhere and the kitchen is too drafty (in my house). Water in her ears will not cause an ear infection. She is still new. You will get used to it and will soon laugh about the days where you were scared to bathe her

awwww! dont worry about water in the ear! DS gets water on his ears with every bath. There is a yellow bear sponge they sell at BRU it only cost a few dollars! Lay that in baby tub so she doesnt slip. Also... if you find shes cold... you can do the bath in the bathroom and steam up the room with the shower first!

She does usually end up with some on her hands b/c she touches it on her body before I rinse it off... then she puts her hand in her mouth. She cries probably b/c it tastes bad I'm sure, although yesterday I used the Aveeno bath soap and even when she put her soapy hand in her mouth she didn't cry. Maybe it tastes better? I'm not encouraging she have it in her mouth, but I'm assuming it's nontoxic - right?
Thank you all for the encouraging comments. The doctor today told me in front of DH that she's not going to get an ear infection... that's what ear wax is for!
He probably got that nonsensical theory from his mother.

Re: I hate bath time - HELP!
I used the sling with DS for about 3 months and then after that just sat him in the tub. I am always terrified about getting too much water in his ears still and he is 12 months old. But i know he wont get an ear infection or anything I am just terrified.

Re: I hate bath time - HELP!
I could have written this too! Although she is my second child she is traumatized by bath time and that traumatizes me!!! So she rarely gets a bath Yesterday I washed her face, back(as well as I could!), her chest and arms while I was holding her. Then I put her in the water to wash her bath. She seemed a little calmer with this.
