I hate it when people say...
that I should let DS get used to sleeping with loud noises around. Ok how do you do that if your child is light sleeper?
They always say "well you are the one who always wants things quiet around him"
DS is a light a sleeper!!!!!!!! Either they don't get it or maybe it's just me.
Do light sleepers ever grow out of this phase?

I'm still a light sleeper, but I agree with you, you either are or aren't. My brother is a VERY deep sleeper and we (obviously) grew up in the same house, so I find it hard to believe it's environment.

I never understood that either. I don't like sleeping around loud noise, why would my child?

Re: I hate it when people say...
Perhaps these people should stay home with DS all day and spend 50% of that time getting him to stay alseep and then have someone just walk in and make the slightest bit of noise.

Slowly introduce it now
When he was first born you were probably very nervous around him and very QUIET.

i don't think i remember reading anyone say you should let DS get used to sleeping with "loud noises".....(or maybe this was someone in RL) but the point is, try getting him used to SOME kind of noise in the background, i.e., soft music, the tv, the fan...etc..something, so that it's not completely silent. eventually, he WILL fall asleep with some noise in the background - good luck.

Best bet is to invest in a sound machine.....you've been told this before...at least try it out and see if it helps

Re: I hate it when people say...
I really used to believe that motto too, until I had my DS. He is an extremely light sleeper. I tried in the beginning to get him used to noise but it didn't work. Now I unplug the phone and be quiet during his nap time. I don't believe you can turn someone into a heavy sleeper.

I dont know if they outgrow it - but you should definitely try the noise thing to see if it works. We knew from the beginning to make alot of noises around here - we are a loud group of people - so she would have to learn to sleep through it.

Re: I hate it when people say...
I am guilty of this
When DS was born I tried to be quiet but between a dog, the door bell, the phone always going, the TV, etc. it never ended.
I have to say from a newborn until even now he can sleep through anything.
My MIL told me to not walk around on tip toes and worry about every little noise and I thought she was crazy, but it was actually one of the best things I did.

Re: I hate it when people say...
But how do you get a light sleeper who won't sleep long to sleep through noise?
Doesn't anyone feel my and know what I mean?

Re: I hate it when people say...
I know what you mean. I don't think you'll ever get him used to loud, sudden noises. I think you can get him used to some background noise until he's in a deeper sleep.
My sister used to have her house COMPLETELY silent for her son when he was sleeping. He's the lightest sleeper of any kid. I think she made a mistake tiptoeing around her house, whispering.
We live on a main road. It took awhile for my kids to adjust to the traffic going by. I wouldn't blast loud music (although my husband practices his guitar with an amp in the basement).
If you look at some of the sleep clinic websites, you'll see that they don't advocate sleeping with a "stimulus" on. People that fall asleep watching TV aren't as rested as people that turn the TV off. The theory is that the brain activity is more active than it should be. If you've ever woken up with a dream that incorporated the TV show that was on, you'll know what I mean.
You just need to get him to a deep sleep (forgot what phase that is, the one after REM)

That's the problem, how do I get him into a deep sleep. I don't think he ever gets there. Well about for the first 15-20 minutes.
