I hate not knowing anything about cars....how much do new brakes cost?
My dh who also knows nothing about cars took the car to be inspected and the mechanic told him that the brakes were shot as well as the rooters. He quoted him 600...is that about right?

We just had brakes and rotors done this spring. It was about 500 for a small SUV.

Depends on the car. On my Chevy Malibu - they were very expensive! I think well over $500.

My DH did mine and I think they were $300-$400 for just the parts. He did the labor himself, so that saved some money, so your estimate seems fair.

I have a newer crossover so fortunately, have not needed brakes, but a couple years ago, on a tiny Focus, I paid at least $500 to get them done.

I think we paid about 500 for them. The break pads don't cost that much it is the labor cost for removing them and refinishing the roters that is the expensive part of it as they are hand ground.

The same thing happened to us 2 weeks ago- we paid 680 or something like that.

I just replaced front brakes and my rotors. came out to $280 with oil change and front fog log fixed, including labor.
We love our mechanic. He is on Jericho Turnpike.
