I hate the last high school game of a season...

Ok, I'll be honest. The school where I work isn't known for its athletic prowess (and that's an understatement.) Our football team rarely wins (and by rarely, I mean that when they won one game this season, it was a VERY big deal.) But the kids on the team (this one, in particular) are ALL heart. They care SO much about it and don't give up even when they're not winning.

They were SO pumped for last night. It was Homecoming. It was the last home game. It was the last GAME, period. And they lost. And for some of them, they'll never play organized football again.

I hate it. I hate how they look when that realization sinks in. I hate that so few kids in the school support them just because they don't win -- I understand it, but I hate it nonetheless. The kids on this team know that I'm one of their supporters, so I stayed until the end.

Most of all, I hate it when senior football players come at me for a hug and start sobbing on my shoulder. I hate it, hate it, hate it. I wish they could've won.

You know, "nel," I wish I had the power over men that you have! I taught in an all-GIRLS school for seven years and I think I had maybe three of them cry on me in all that time. Every story of yours ends with some big burly guy breaking down in your arms. Teach me your secrets!!

In this case, I think it was me being in the WRONG place at the wrong time. I just wanted them to know that at least SOMEONE stayed till the end, but I felt so awful. If they'd won, I bet it would've been different, but I wasn't holding out much hope for that...

Hmmm...so what you're saying is to be there for the loss. So maybe if I hang around after the Yankees lose the WS, I can be there to wipe away Derek Jeter's tears...you might be on to something...

Awww, that's so great that you could be there for them, "Nel".

The boys in my class can get emotional and I can find them way easier to deal with then the girls.

You always have such nice stories a la Goodbye Mr, Chips or something
