I have a dentist appointment next week
Is it ok for me to go? I'm pretty sure I can't get xrays but I should be ok getting a cleaning, right? What about novacaine if I have a cavity? I'll be 28w1d if that makes a difference.

It is fine for you to go. Just tell them you are pregnant, and they probably won't do x-rays. But it is important to keep up with regular cleanings when you are preggo, b/c you are more apt to gum disease.

Re: I have a dentist appointment next week
You're actually supposed to go twice when you're PG because the risk of gum disease is so much higher. So it's definitely fine to go.
They can even do an xray if absolutely necessary, but most will not especially if you've had one done in the past year or two.
Dental health during PG is extremely important because infections can cause complications, and even things like not flossing can cause your blood pressure to rise. It's great you have an appointment coming up! Good luck!

ITA!!! I had one cleaning in Tri-1 and another one schedule for Tri-3. My dentist would not do x-rays. I did have two teeth that needed a slight fill ( they think I have been grinding my teeth at night during pregnancy). So it was a quick repair without Novacaine.
Goodluck!!

Re: I have a dentist appointment next week
I just had a root canal done where I had novacaine and xrays. My OB gave me a form that cleared me for a bunch of dental procedures at my 8 week appt.
For xrays they double shielded me and used a neck shield as well. If you should need a filling, they will use novocaine without epinephrine. The dentist called my OB before he did anything even though I had the form.
HTH!!

Re: I have a dentist appointment next week
If you're going for a cleaning - then yes it's fine for you to go, and recommended like others have said.
As for the cavities - I know that my dentist will not do any work in the 3rd trimester unless ABSOLUTLY necessary.
when I was in the end of my first trimester and beginning of my second I had a root canal done. He couldn't give me NOVACAINE - but he was able to give me CARBOCAINE. the novacaine has epenephrine (sp?) in it which can make your heart race and blood pressure go up and it's not good for the baby.
And I'm pretty sure no x-rays in the 3rd trimester unless absolutly necessary too.
good luck !!

Re: I have a dentist appointment next week
Im going at 32 weeks for a cleaning. This will be the 2nd time i had one this pregnancy. I would def go for the cleaning but wouldnt do anything else unless its an emergency.
ETA: For anyone who has gone to the dentist in the 3rd tri, is it uncomfortable being in the chair? I have this crazy fear of being on my back for too long.

Re: I have a dentist appointment next week
There is a direct link between low birthweight babies and gum disease. So frequents cleanings while pregnant are recommended. We have our pregnant patients come in every 3 months. For us, xrays while pregnant are only if they are necessary and we double lead apron. Novacaine should be epinephrine free if used. Any kind of restorative work should be held off until after the pregnancy unless totally necassary ie: pain, infection etc. Happy dental appt to you!
