I have a dream feeding question? (best night with joey ever)
so lately DS keeps falling asleep right after his 730/8pm bottles give or take a half hour or so. Last night he passed out while I was feeding him so I thought....hmmm maybe I'll make this his "bedtime" and I'll dream feed him when I go to bed for the night, but I have no idea what dream feeding exactly is. last night he was out by 830...I went to bed around 1030 and attempted to dream feed but he was farting up a STORM and thought for sure he had a poop....so I grab him, change him (mind you, no poop! grr!) feed him and put him back to bed....(woke at 445 am, which was great)
so tonight I thought maybe I'll try again....it was the best night ever too...we bathed him, then I got to rock him in the dark with our star turtle light show on the ceiling, I read him good night moon, he fell asleep in my arms and I put him in his bassinet and normally we don't do this b/c "bed time" at 10pm was just a quick thing...change/feed in the dark/bassinet no bells and whistles.
EITHER WAY...(sorry tangent)
When you dream feed.....do I change him? do I burp him? or is it strictly just a feed? I feel weird not changing him b/c suppose he peed, then he's in a wet diaper all night???? I'm confused. & Do you give the full amount of food? (DS would be 5oz)
AND is dream feeding ok?

I have df ds in the past and I always burp him but not change him
pick him up,feed him, burp him, place back in the crib...no talking while feeding, I would hum softly if he began to stir
I always gave the same amount in the bottle

Re: I have a dream feeding question? (best night with joey ever)
When we do a dream feed, I do NOT change her. It wakes her up & defeats the purpose. Just hope for the best.
As far as burping goes, I'll burp her either 1/3 and 2/3 through the bottle or halfway through. That way, if she wakes up while I burp her, she'll usually go right back to sleep for the rest of the bottle. Then, as soon as I pick her up in the morning, and hold her upright, she usually burps. But she never complains about it.
ETA: 7 weeks is when we started dreamfeeding.

Re: I have a dream feeding question? (best night with joey ever)
I would dream feed Shane at around 8 weeks, just after we switched fully to formula (oh happy day). I did a similar "bedtime" 8 or 8:30 I think? but the "dream" feed was a bit later, around 11:30 or 12, when I went to bed. Just like Stefanie I did the QUIETEST dream feeding, no talking, just a little rocking or humming; DH used to talk to him all the time so I fired him from dream feeding I never changed him UNLESS there was a poop, and I did that as quietly as possible too, your technique really improves in a week or two!!!

That's what I figured since last night I woke him for NO REASON b/c there was no poop & was like...I guess this defeats the purpose of a dream feed if he gets fully woken up! (although he still went back down)
good, I'm glad you started at 7 weeks too. I find it's going to be helpful too, especially since I go back to work in just about a month I'd love to have a special good night bonding time, so making his "bedtime" 8pm, I'm able to do this.

Re: I have a dream feeding question? (best night with joey ever)
I don't do anything, not even a burp, because when they are that sleepy, they don't take in much, if any, air.
I just pull her out of the crib, nurse her, and then put her back in - she's essentially asleep the whole time...

Thank you!!! (yea, we've been on formula since 3 weeks)
Side Note: I'm about to fire DH from the 5am feeding......he's loud as H E L L!!!!! I could've killed him this morning b/c it's suppose to be helpful to me, so I have a little extra time to sleep and yet this is him
"dev, I need a burp cloth" "dev, did you bring the bottle in" (no, if it's your turn to do the 5am feeding it's your job to set up the bottle before bed, which he always forgets and leaves DS crying my arms while he goes out to make up bottle) "hiiiii Joey (while he's changing him)" (then there is me smacking him!)

Oh, and BTW, once we started dreamfeeding, she slept through the night consistently - until at least 6 a.m.
Until 13 weeks, but that's a whole other post...

DS does go to 5am most nights (he's FF, so i think that has a lot to do with it), so an extra hour would be extra special
Until 13 weeks, but that's a whole other post...
Oye, great!

Us too... she was sleeping 10-12 hour stretches until she turned 3 months, and it's been a struggle ever since!

OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS I distinctly remember those days and when he'd do that I'd walk in, with this face and my greeting was "SHHH" (but not a nice "shhh" more like a CURSE!) DH, ever quick on the uptake, would then be like "What? Why are you so grumpy? Geez ". Ahhhh good times, good times

& when they talk back after the shushing...you have to shush again b/c they obviously didn't get the first SHHHH!! lol lovely, they try!

Re: I have a dream feeding question? (best night with joey ever)
we have always changed emma during the dreamfeed - it 'wakes' her enough to get her to suck.
we change her - while I change her, dave feeds her and then we put her in bed with us (we co-sleep). there is no need to burp - as they are not eating normally, so no air is taken in.
here's a great website: http://www.easybabylife.com/dreamfeed.html

This is awesome! DH totally does not get winding down time and voices and lighting and noices! I love the stomping parade up the stairs just after I put DS in!
We're in FL now and I just may try a dream feed tonight! Tried it once months ago and DS wanted nothing to do with it. But I'll give it a try here!

I'm going to try this tonight...just so I get the gist, while they are sleeping, feed them before they wake up?? I've never heard of this, but I'll give anything a try! Thanks Dev!

That's it. Right before you go to bed, so you get a solid block of sleep.

Re: I have a dream feeding question? (best night with joey ever)
Thank you for this post! I am planning to move them to the nursery next weekend at 7.5 weeks and I will definitely try the dreamfeed. If I could get five hours out of them it would be heaven...
Question though - I swaddle them at night - do you feed in the swaddle or unswaddle them?

I fed in the swaddle last night....although he got his hands out, so it was a bit of a struggle but he still stayed sleeping.
