I have a wedding tomorrow in Philly....fashion question....

Ceremony is at 2:30....reception is at 6:00

We have to leave here in NJ around 11:00....friends we are meeting are wearing a different outfit to the ceremony. I wasn't planning on this, but now it kind of makes sense b/c I don't want to be in a cocktail dress at 2:30 in the afternoon.....

Is it ok if I wear a nice pair of black pants with a fancy top to the ceremony and then change into my cocktail dress for the reception? Basically I'm asking if it's ok to wear black pants to the ceremony.....?

ETA: If I don't wear pants, what kind of dress could I wear to the ceremony? I have a lot of dresses...just not sure which one is appropriate...

I think it would be fine. What kind of top would you wear with the black pants?

LOL...I haven't figured that out yet....I do have my new CL shoes to wear with the pants though, so that's exciting :) I have to go through my closet once DD goes down for a nap...

I think it's fine to do that, but honestly if a lot of people are coming from out of town, most people will probably wear what they're going to wear that night--our wedding was a similar time differential and I didn't see anyone wear a different outfit to the ceremony....so either way I think you're fine Chat Icon

Re: I have a wedding tomorrow in Philly....fashion question....

Totally depends on the couple, the location and the venue.

I live in the Philly area - some of the weddings I've been to are ridiculously casual and you can get away with anything at the ceremony. But, some have been ridiculously lavish and formal.

The weddings downtown tend to be significantly more lavish and formal. If the ceremony is at a venue/church downtown, I don't know if pants would be appropriate. IF in the surrounding burbs, then yes, I would say appropriate.

If you don't mind telling me the general location, I can give you more input...

Definately think that is fine. Plus who would want to drive in a cocktail dress all day long..Pair it with a nice top & you will be good to go

The couple is pretty casual. The reception is at The Crystal Tea Room in downtown Philly. It is black tie optional.

I think that's fine-- whenever I have gone to church weddings, I am amazed at how casually some people show up.

If you wear a dress-- something like a wrap dress, or whatever-- something comfortable that will still look nice after sitting in the car for a while.

That's a fairly formal venue. Is the ceremony in the Tea Room or is it at a Church downtown somewhere?

The ceremony is at a church downtown. I have nixed the pants idea...I tried a few pants/tops outfits on and it just didn't look or feel right. I talked to a friend who is going and she is going to wear a sundress-type dress....

Good idea - if the church is downtown, even if the couple is casual, I think it's probably a smidge more formal than you'd expect, especially if the venue is the crystal tea room - very nice place.

If it's in a church I would not wear the pants. Wear a nice dress for the ceremony and a dressy dress for the reception.

Nice black pants with a dressy top and nice heels sounds like a very classy and lovely outfit for the ceremony-go for it!

That was my other idea-a dressier sundress. This way, if you are going really jazzy that night, you don't have to be uncomfortable during the day!
