I have to gush
I am in total awe of Alex's teacher this year. She is teaching the kids about things that I would never dream they are ready for, and yet, they are eating it up!
Last week's lesson was about space - they learned about the planets, stars, earth, moon, astronauts, etc. They made little astronaut space suits out of old soda bottles. They have a homework assignment to observe the moon, draw it on a piece of paper and predict what shape it will be next week based on a chart she gave them.
Alex has come home every night asking to see the moon, and teaching me all about the planets. She even talked to me about the rings around Saturn, about the "red planet" and about how the astronauts went to the moon! This weekend she begged me to show her the NASA website so she could see the moon again and the astronauts, and the teacher actually sent each of us an email with links to websites where the kids can learn more about what they are learning in school. This week's lesson plan is about discovering life on other planets...
And on top of this, every morning they have "journal" time - the teacher made each of them a pretty journal, and for 20 minutes every day, they "free write" in their journal, and write today's date, and send it home every night so we can see what she's writing about at school.
I am just amazed - I never thought, at 5, that Alex would be ready for this kind of stuff, and yet, she's eating it up! So much so, that she's now complaining that she's bored in her other, hebrew immersion, afternoon class
I wrote an email to her morning teacher last night giving her accolades and told her how much I appreciate the passion she's instilling in these little 5 year olds for learning
