Autism & animals
this is about my coworker Claire and her son Milo (who is autistic and bipolar); they got Milo an autism service dog last year and this article hilites them and the connection between kids and animals.
Its so amazing how far Milo has come b/c of chad in just a short time.

It's interesting. DS could not care less about our dogs. They really are just objects in the room or "things getting in the way".
He rarely pet them. He has done it but very rarely.
Maybe if a service dog would bring him juice, cookies and snack on demand he would warm up to a dog.

through Autism Service dogs of america. they're based in Oregon. My coworker is a single mom (as her DH left her...couldnt deal with 2 sick kids) ..she raised the $15,000 fee through fundraising and donations.
Milo is a part of the child study center and they wrote letters, sent videos etc. documenting why he would be a good candidate. I think milo is the first in NYC to be assigned a dog from them for autism purposes.
the dogs are raised for a year by a trainer. during that time they are assigned to a patient. My coworker went to oregon to pick him up, get training and brought him all the way back to NY. Lots of hard work, but the change in Milo is amazing!
