I Hope You Don't Mind Another PCOS-related question
Sorry to intrude on here ladies but I have PCOS so I'll read some of those posts sometimes.
I'm curious about those of you who take Metformin or Glucophage - how many mg a day do you take?
I take 1500 MG of GLucophage but I don't really think it's helping with any of the weight related issues.
Just looking for some info from others who take it!
TIA!

Hi! I remember you and I have the same wedding anniversary! Anyway, I too have PCOS. I'm not on that medication so I can't help but I just wanted to say hi

I took 1500 of Metformin.
I didn't really lose any noticable weight on it.

Re: I Hope You Don't Mind Another PCOS-related question
1500. I lost weight but I dont think it was the metformin, I was on a program. However, I am not really using the program now and so far, my weight has been the same. So I am not gaining. Maybe, the metformin is helping in that respect.
If you are non-insulin resistant, you may not see weightloss. Also, how long have you been on metformin? It could take up to 3 months for the meds to kick in.

Re: I Hope You Don't Mind Another PCOS-related question
I am insulin-resistant and have been taking the meds since Aug 05 - I actually had to switch from the Metformin to Glucophage because I was so violently ill on the Met that it was seriously interfering with my daily life and new job. It took me a very long time to work myself up to the 1500 mg because I was so scared I'd get real sick again. Although supposedly Glucophage is just name-brand Met, for whatever reason I do not get sick on it!
Maybe I'll try the Met again to shake things up Whenever I went up in dosage, I usually did it when I was on vacation so if I got sick at least I'd have time off.
Maybe I'll ask my doctor about moving up to 2000 mg - I wonder if that will do anything...

Re: I Hope You Don't Mind Another PCOS-related question
Just curious.....when do you take yours?
I take mine in the evening an hour before I go to bed. I only had problems in the beginning but now, I am fine.
ETA: I dont know what to tell you about the weight loss other than....have you checked your thyroid levels?
I have an underactive thyroid and I am on 50mg Synthroid. If you are taking synthroid, maybe ask your doctor to check your levels again to see if you need to increase your dosage.

Re: I Hope You Don't Mind Another PCOS-related question
I'm supposed to be on 1500mgs of Metformin, HOWEVER.... it was making me so sick, so I cut it down to 1000mgs (I'm bad though, sometimes I forget to take the second pill). I'm afraid to go the full dose because it was making me so sick. My Dr. said that was okay, but I may try to get myself back up to 1500

I wonder if you'd be ok on the Glucophage like I am...you should ask your doctor about it. We had to have the doctor write a letter and send documentation to the insurance company so they would cover it because it's name brand, but all the fighting for it was worth it.

I do the same, i'm suppose to take 1500 mgs but I take 1000 mgs of metformin making my way up to 1500 very soon. I take it all right before I go to bed and I don't take the ER (extended version) I take the regular one. I lost some weight but I think it's because i'm trying to stay away from all the bad foods.

I take 2000 mg of Metformin, when I first started taking it I experienced some minor stomach cramps.

Re: I Hope You Don't Mind Another PCOS-related question
I take 1500mg extended release Metformin. I take one pill with breakfast and one with dinner. This is my 5th cycle on it. I didn't O the first 2 cycles but have been since. I had to switch to a modified south beach diet because if I eat bad carbs I need to find a bathroom and fast (sorry abot TMI). I have lost about 20 pounds since starting the Met and have plateued at a healthy weight for me. I was overweight from the PCOS. I do make sure to take my folic acid and pnv at least 2 hours after my Met since Met can block the body from absorbing folic acid. My body did adjust to the meds and as long as I watch what I eat and drink lots of water I have no s/e anymore. Good luck.

Yeah my doctor didn't tell me the pharmacist did. I take my folic acid at lunch between my 2 met doses just to be sure my body has enough time to absorb it.
