I just came back from my level 2 -- a little nervous...
Well, everything looked good except that the doctor saw a marker for Down's -- something called an echocardial foci or calcium deposit on the baby's heart. She was not that alarmed by it, and said that it could turn out to be nothing, but it could be an indicator for Down's or something else. She also said that there weren't any other problems with the baby's anatomy, so that is good, but this still makes me nervous. Has this happened to anyone else and is your baby fine? I really need some reassuring and some positive vibes, please!

I think that they can send you for a fetal echo to give you more clarification of it.

Re: I just came back from my level 2 -- a little nervous...
did you have the 1st trimester nt done? or the AFP done? If you did those should have been an indicator. Im sure the doctor could send you for more test...
Im sending you and my prayers

I am 28 and the doctor didn't think that it was necessary to get the AFP or NT done, so I opted not to get them. Now, in hindsight, I am wishing I did for peace of mind more than anything else!

My daughter had this. It turned out to be absolutely nothing. I was told that it's a very soft marker for DS & unless they've found other markers, you likely don't need to worry. My daughter is completely healthy, btw.

YUP.... they are very soft markers. I know of 4 other people who's baby had a "spot" on the heart. THey are all fine.

Re: I just came back from my level 2 -- a little nervous...
i'm going through the same thing - both my babies have dilated kidneys. I read online that this is too a soft marker for downs, but my doctor said not to even think about it. All my testing came back fine and I think there needs to be a few markers for the doctors to even get concerned

At my 20 week sono my baby had the echogenic cardic foci as well. I was very nervous, but they said that it is a very soft marker, everything else was normal, and my afp came back good as well. So, try not to worry!

Thank you! All of your stories are making me feel so much better. I now honestly think that if it was something to worry about, my doc would have sent me for more tests, but she didn't.

We seriously are having such identical pregnancies - though my Level II issue was regarding my cervix. I have definitely heard of people who hear this and everything turns out fine. Did you get that ultrascreen to check for your chances of Downs earlier in PG?

I think a recent poster went through something similar not long ago. She had an amnio then, all was fine and she recently delivered a healthy baby.
FMing you the thread...

Like others said I'm sure if it was something to worry about your doctor would have said so and would have sent you for additional testing.
Just think-the parental worrying over everything related to your child has just begun

Your Dr def would have sent you for more tests or for some other kind of consult if it were a concern. I know several people who had soft markers for downs (including me) and everything turned out fine.

I don't know if it's too late in your pregnancy, but amnio might still be an option if you are very concerned. Follow your instincts rather than your doctor's. GL!

Re: I just came back from my level 2 -- a little nervous...
Science today is amazing what they can see and do these days but sometimes it isn't a blessing b.c. they can see what they "think" are possible problems. In some cases they are right but in many they are wrong.
If they are pretty positive that there is a problem you can have an amnio still if you feel you want one b.c you want to know. When I was pregnant with DD they thought (based on an abnormally small stomach and excess fluid) that she had a swallowing problem that would need immediate surgery at birth before she could be fed. They could only give me 50% chance if this was actually the case. I ended up having an amnio b.c the condition can come with some horrible diseases where the baby doesn't live after birth (which were negative) I went thru my entire pregnancy thinking she could need surgery at birth so I lined up a surgeon etc just in case. Well long story - she was born complication free and very healthy.
It is hard but a soft marker isn't a definite. If you are worried you could get a second opinion from a MF dr or have an amnio or both.
