I just got back from the wake for the little boy from Kings Park who died a few days ago.
My husband knew the family from growing up in Kings Park. DH wanted me to go with him tonight. There was nothing I could have done to mentally prepare myself for this wake. We saw several of my husband's friends there. We were together but, for the most part, we were speechless. I remarked to DH about how odd it felt to see all the friends that we have literally danced on bars with and be unable to even say anything to comfort anyone. There were no words. On the way there I assumed that I would figure out who the child's parents were because they would be the most distraught people in the room. Well, everyone there was in tears and totally distraught. DH introduced me briefly to the boy's parents. I also met the boy's g-dfather. The pictures of the little boy showed a typical fun loving boy. There were notes from his friends. I wanted to tell that little boy that wherever he is, he should find my friend Jeff, who passed in August, if he wants a great role model who will talk to him about sports and music and teach him a few things about girls  . As it turns out, the little boy and Jeff have birthdays the same week. There have been too many losses for too many people this year. Tonight it did not matter exactly how this boy died. A family lost a young son.

I beleive he got very ill from getting the flu shot. Please correct me if I'm wrong?

It think it is still inconclusive from what I've heard. A little too much of a coincidence though...
So heartbreaking. I can't even imagine the pain this family must be going through. Count your blessings everyday!!!

While I know the family and watched this little boy grow up, I cannot bring myself to go to the wake. I care very much for all of them and my heart breaks everytime I think about it, but still I can't do it.
For those that don't know, Sean was 8 years old and died from ADEM, which is a neurological disorder. He apparently contracted it after getting the flu shot. I was told that it had nothing to do with his passing, but from what I've read it sounds like it does. He was taken off of life support on Sunday and passed away shortly thereafter.
He was a loved little boy whose life was cut short too soon. My heart goes out to all that came into contact with him!

I won't lie and say it is easy to be there but you would not be the only person who just can't look at the casket. A friend of mine greeted the family but mostly stayed in the hallway areas. It was just too difficult. I am sure they know that you are thinking about them.
ETA: I just realized from your profile that you are pregnant. In my culture and religion, a lot of pregnant women don't go to funeral homes or places of burial.
