I just heard a disturbing new trend....(this may turn into a controversial topic)
My father was telling me a few of his friends at work that have children decided against getting their children vaccinated....there has been a high amount of cases of autism and the new thinking is that it may be from vaccinations.
I feel for the children now because when they go out they arent protected......not just from things like Polio but what about hepatitis and measles etc

Even crazier....I know a mom that recently participated in a "Chicken Pox Party" so she could expose her son to Chicken Pox so he would get it, rather than getting him vaccinated. To each his own, but that is just sick in my opinion.

I do the books in a daycare/ preschool office..part of my job is keep up on all the files on the kids..and there immunizations and stuff...
Well EVERY KID HAS TO HAVE AN IMMUNZIATION RECORD..
I have one child who doesnt...and they have a letter from the state, saying she has waived it for religious purposes... however if I did not have that letter she would not be able to attend...

Re: I just heard a disturbing new trend....(this may turn into a controversial topic)
i actually have a co worker who explained to me that what they are doing is not allowing their son to recieve multiple vaccines at once...because there is a high mercury content in vaccines...especially those that are multiple vaccince...so they are giving their son one vaccine at a time....I guess that better than not at all....but the poor baby is getting a new shot every month.
and to answer someone's ? before...I think that you need the Mumps Ruebella and Measles vaccince to start school....I'm not sure about any others.

You do need the MMR vaccine to start school but it seems that more and more people are spreading apart the shots so the baby isn't exposed to a high level of mercury that is a possible link to autism.

Re: I just heard a disturbing new trend....(this may turn into a controversial topic)
I debated on not giving the shots. After SERIOUS well researched soul searching we decided with all the immigration (legal & illegal) around the US the chances of contracting something erraticated in the US but not somewhere else was too great to not get vaccinated. As for the autism link there are so many contradictory studies I dont know who to believe so I decided to make sure my ped doesn't use any vaccines with thimerasol. So far so good!!
ETA: My neighbors kids are not vaccinated and her daughter just got rubella. She is too young for the shot but her 4 year old brother could still get it and pass it around.

My pediatrician told me that there is no mercury in any of the vaccines they use, even the multiples. His office hasn't had any vaccines with mercury or thimerasol in years. He said he believes none of the vaccines in circulation have mercury anymore unless they are old or from a questionable source. So, the mercury content of a vaccine should not be a reason not to get vaccinated.

That's just ridiculous!!
Like PP said, there are very few, if ANY, vaccines that are preserved with thimerasol (containing mercury). There is not enough sufficient evidence to link any vaccine to autism. It's just a shame that people would do this and endanger my child.

Re: I just heard a disturbing new trend....(this may turn into a controversial topic)
Someone in my family has an autistic child and the mother (my cousin) is convinced that her child got it from the mercury in vaccinations. She is even into this group that is trying to promote it. Her oldest son is non autistic and she did not get one of the vaccinations that she gave the younger son so she is convinced this must be the cause.
In addition, the group believes that it will be hidden by the government because if it ever comes out this was the cause every parent with an autistic child will sue the pharmacutical companies and make them bankrupt.
I researched it after hearing everything she had to say and the sad thing is there is really nothing I found that convinced me this is even the slightest bit true. There have been studies I read about it but there are tons of other studies blaming it on one thing or another.
My feeling is autism has been around for many years and just was never diagnosed. I have an Uncle who I think has it but was always considered "slow" when he was younger and just "weird" when we got older. Why it has increased so much I don't know...maybe better professionals to diagnose it, something in the environment, things in formula. I do believe these kids are genetically disposed to something in the environment that if they come in contact with it causes Autism. What it is I don't know.
However, when I have kids I will get them vacinated.

There are ways around it. My twin isn't vaccinating her children. I've vaccinated mine.
The way around it in NY is that you have to claim religious regions for not vaccinating your child. Something along the lines of "It is my god given right not to vaccinate my child". If anyone wants the info on it, FM me. My sister paid her lawyer to handle it and has the paperwork allowing her daughter to attend school w/o vaccinations. There aren't a lot of lawyers that do this type of work, but this guy specialized in it.

IMO I think you should get the children vaccinated as a baby due to the high risks of getting sick they have a very low immune system and can get really sick.
I have a friend who didn't have her child vaccinated until she had to start school and they had to give multiple shots at a time (and had to go every couple of day or every week I don't quite remember to get them all in time for school. I would rather have them done now and have them spaced out through out the months and years ratherthen getting all at once.

Re: I just heard a disturbing new trend....(this may turn into a controversial topic)
My doc told me they don't use vaccines with those ingredients anymore so I don't need to be concerened. My mom always had us go over our friend's house when they had chicken pox's she wanted us to make sure we got it when we were young so we didn't have to worry as adults. Needless to say it never worked for my brother or myself and I've been tested and I don't have a immunity so it makes no sense. Now at 27 when Jack is 1 year we both have to get chicken pox shots (varicella vax)
So in some ways I don't see a problem with having your kids play with a kid with pox's. I would much rather have had it as a child then have to worry about my child getting it and then getting it myself... and also my Father had shingles for my wedding we were freaking out that I would have an outbreak from it but luckily didn't.
Now, if this "party" was done for an infant that is insane! But if it was an older child I can somewhat understand what the mother was thinking but in 2005 there is no need for it since there is a VAX back in the 1970's and 1980's I can totally understand why a mother would do it.

This was for an infant...crazy, huh? I think the big difference is that when we were little there was no vaccine, so yes, much better to be exposed and get as a child as opposed to an adult which can cause severe problems in an adult. Nowadays there is a vaccine, so to choose infant exposure over a vaccine is wacko, IMO.

there has been no conclusive evidence that childhood vaccinations cause autism. however, as a teacher for children with autism, and as someone who is quite educated in the field, i would still request mercury or thimerisol free vaccines.

Not only are these child at risk for getting a serious illness but now they can be responsible for spreading diseases to other children. I worry about Kevin when he gets older and goes to school and being in a class where there are children who aren't vaccinated. I think its so irresponsible. If the parents are worried about the mercury, they should insist on Mercury-free vaccines.
