I just realized I never posted the sad news about Rocky

After we got him back from NSAL and he supposedly never had parvo (or according to other people we talked to there, barely escaped with his life from it) he was fine for 2-3 days and then started limping on 2 legs. We took him to our vet instead of NSAL's hospital and she said he had genetic leg issues and distemper and the parvo he might or might not have had could be coming back because of the lethargy. It was a hard, heartbreaking decision but we didnt want to knowingly take in a dog that would have life long health issues and we gave him back to NSAL. We only had him a total of 9 days and it ws still SO hard. Now my dream of having 2 dogs instead of 2 kids is kind of ruined, at least until I am over Rocky. Thanks for all of your help when I posted questions. Chat Icon

I'm so sorry but unfortunately these types of stories are all too true of NSAL dogs. NSAL is a great place because they are a "no kill" but they go to faraway places to buy dogs for pennies and then require a large donation from the adopters for the dogs that a majority are very ill. It's great that they have on site vets but they don't have a place for the families with broken hearts to heal. Hope that with time, your heart will heal.

Re: I just realized I never posted the sad news about Rocky

ugh I'm so sorry

Similar thing happened to us with Sparky. A wonderful kitten we had for 6mo. He was such a great cat and seriously a huge part of our lives. But he died due to a disease our vet said he had gotten at NSAL.

They (NSAL) said pretty much "are you sure, show us a Death certificate and we'll give you a discount on a new kitten"

They sent him home with us with a clean bill of health but in reality he was suffering badly from an upper respiratory infection so bad he could sleep until he passed out. I used to have to carry him like a baby on my shoulder so he could drain down instead of basically drowning in his spit. This was only 24hrs after picking him up from NSAL

He died of a disease that infected his intestines with tumors that grew so large they stopped him from being able to eat or pass foods.

He slowly starved to death before we were able to realize what was wrong and the vet said there wasn't enough left to put him back together.

I'm sorry but I *HATE* NSAL for what they did to us. The pain, the hassle they gave us even to GET Sparky (error in paperwork had my hubby down as getting a cat while he was in the Air Force so they tried to refuse him a new pet), the ignorance they had, the cold and nonchalant way they treated us during our time of suffering and grief.

I'm sorry you had to suffer at all. Hope you find a puppy soon to complete your home. We ended up with Last Hope Kittens who are still with us. Good Luck

I'm so sorry to hear about this...unfortunately I have to agree with previous posters. It's a pretty common occurance with NSAL. Although the intent of NSAL is wonderful, there are so many stories I've heard llike this.

If/When you're ready to adopt again, bid-a-wee is a great organization
