I just saw an ad in the Parenting magazine about a new formula called..
Enfamil Restfull and it is to be used for nighttme feeds. It is supposed to thicken in the belly and digest slowly so a baby can sleep longer. I was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this.
Has anyone used this and does it work? My DS cant have it anyway...i was just wondering

Anything that would cause a chemical reaction to thicken in my child's stomach causes great concern to me. I do not think I'd use it. Babies will sleep at night when they're ready.

Re: I just saw an ad in the Parenting magazine about a new formula called..
Im out of the formula feed stage but I'm sure I probably would have asked my Ped then tried it.
Everything new is always considered strange and weird. the number of formula options today vs 35yrs ago alone is astounding. We never think twice now about acid refulx formula or gentlease or any of the many formulas out there we have to help us with our chldren's various needs.
This is one of those things that will take a lil time for folks to 'get' but if it works and there's no side affects (constipation, crankiness, etc) I can see this being a life saver for many moms.
*shrug*
its all relative I guess

There is not a chemical reaction that makes it thicken in the stomach. I just looked it up, it has rice proteins in it. Rice protein naturally expands. It is similar to when bread gets wet.

I actually bought it but it didn't work out for us!! It was too thick and wouldn't even make it through the nipple lol. I tried a larger nipple and the flow was just too much for DS.

That makes sense...I have heard of some people giving their babies rice in their nighttime bottles to fill their bellies up before bed. Not that I necessarily agree with it, but that's been happening for ages with some people.

From a pediatric dietitian:
Restfull has rice starch that reacts with pH in babies belly to thicken and digest slower. It is actually enfamil AR, that was re labled. There was a study done showing the reduction in spit up from the product and a new result of longer sleeping was found. (I looked up the clinical when a mom brought this up to me). Does it work?? Maybe. There is a big debate about giving babies cereal to sleep longer. It works for some and not for all. I think it is really designed for those 6mth and up babies that do not sleep - it may or may not help.

DD used Enfamil AR because of her spitting up and it works the same way...but after she got used to it she took the same amount of bottles per day and did not sleep any longer than usual during the day ( she was a night sleeper from early)

Ok, how stupid am I? I should have known it had something to do with rice. I still think it's a complete gimmick.

RIght, just like Similac Sensitive RS. Sort of like adding rice to the bottle.
