I kid you not this is a REAL news story
BEIJING (AFP) - Used condoms are being recycled into hair bands in southern China, threatening to spread sexually-transmittable diseases they were originally meant to prevent, state media reported Tuesday.
ADVERTISEMENT In the latest example of potentially harmful Chinese-made products, rubber hair bands have been found in local markets and beauty salons in Dongguan and Guangzhou cities in southern Guangdong province, China Daily newspaper said.
"These cheap and colourful rubber bands and hair ties sell well ... threatening the health of local people," it said.
Despite being recycled, the hair bands could still contain bacteria and viruses, it said.
"People could be infected with AIDS, (genital) warts or other diseases if they hold the rubber bands or strings in their mouths while waving their hair into plaits or buns," the paper quoted a local dermatologist who gave only his surname, Dong, as saying.
A bag of ten of the recycled bands sells for just 25 fen (three cents), much cheaper than others on the market, accounting for their popularity, the paper said.
A government official was quoted as saying recycling condoms was illegal.
China's manufacturing industry has been repeatedly tarnished this year by a string of scandals involving shoddy or dangerous goods made for both domestic and foreign markets.
In response, it launched a public relations blitz this summer aimed at playing up efforts to strengthen monitoring systems

Re: I kid you not this is a REAL news story
seriously, I know there are odd stories about things done in china, but I'm skeptical of something sooooo over the top.....
people literally would have to pick through the garbage dump all day... doesn't really make sense. picking up soda cans would bring in much more money.

Maybe they would use the rest of the condom to make the scrunchie part of the scrunchie.

I'm (sickly) curious about the logistics of this, but I don't doubt it could be true.
Have you ever been to China? Outside the big cities (or even inside the big cities)? I have. What you're describing honestly isn't out of the ordinary there. Despite their recent advances, they ARE still a third world country in many respects. They are also a country of over 1 billion people, many of whom are poor with NO jobs. Picking through garbage dumps is a frequent occurence, if not a career, for many people there. It's truly a different world than we see here -- and totally different from how China is often portrayed in the news.
Besides that, with all of their regulations on children and population growth, I'm sure there are an overabundance of condoms there. (Sorta funny, but not so funny...)
This is soooooo disgusting.
