I know-- enough with the Passport Q's.. BUT

So, when you mail in your thing-- I need to technically renew AND change my name... You are supposed to send an original marriage cert. So, they send it back to you??

I don;t see any instructions on how to handle, etc.

I'm in the same boat. I am sending the original, and they are sending it back. DH just applied and had to send his original birth cert but got it back no problem.

Re: I know-- enough with the Passport Q's.. BUT

ok- thanks. I just can't figure it out-- I fit into two categories and the web site just sends you in circles from page to page.

There is only the one form to fill out though- right?

Re: I know-- enough with the Passport Q's.. BUT

I *just* went through this to change my name on my passport and here's what I did...

- filled out the purple form
- sent in 2 pictures
- sent in my original (but still valid) passport
- sent in my original marriage certificate

They always try to make it seem harder than it should be.

Good Luck!

thanks-- yeah, they give so many steps and scenarios, but never the one you are looking for. I know it's not complicated-- but they make it appear to be!

I think I know what you are saying--are you not sure of which form to do? I did the passport renewal and there was a box on there to check name change...I *think*. I haven't sent it in yet so I can check at home. Are the 2 pics just copies of the same pic? Chat Icon

yeah-- just 2 copies of your picture.

You can fill out the form online-- which I just started to do, but I need my passport #-- which I don't have with me.

I'm not sure if this helps but I just had to get my daughter's passport and they kept her birth certificate, I assume they will send it back along with the passport.

Yes, send original marraige certificate and they will send it back to you. I believe I sent a pre-paid overnight cardboard envelope so they wouldn't have to fold it when they sent it back. I'm anal.

Re: I know-- enough with the Passport Q's.. BUT

We just did this for ours but I did not send in our original marriage certificate because my DH was nervous that somehow it would get lost and it is very sentimental to us,

So what I did is that I went to the Town hall where we got our marriage certificate and paid $10 for another copy with a raised seal and sent that in instead....

I did the EXACT same thing. I got an official copy and sent it in.

there is no special way to mail it right?? Do you think it's safe to just put it in a #10 envelope? Maybe I will wait til Sat and drop it off at the Post Office to be safe.

i put the old passport, the check and the 2 photos in a plain white envelope and then stuck that, with the marriage license and application in one of those padded white envelopes that they sell at the post office for a dollar or 2. if you are really nervous, you can always do return receipt also, that way you know someone there signed for it.

On the website, it says to mail in a padded envelope (see #4).

sh*t--- of course I didn't see this before I mailed it. I mailed it and took it to the post office and sent it certified mail. I would think that the person in the post office would have told me if there was a problem with it. I hope it's ok.

I can't see the passport page-- it won't load in safari.

I'm sure its fine - I think it's a bit ridiculous myself. I just sent mine in yesterday, but with a certified bank check (instead of a personal check or money order) . . . I guess we'll see how strict they really are! (The bank rep. told me it was okay.)

Re: I know-- enough with the Passport Q's.. BUT

do i need a brand new passport if my old one is still good ? I"ve been married over a year and I thought I read somewhere that if it's past a year of being married you have to get a brand new one, you can't just change the name. HMMMM....

I am not sure-- you can call the passport hotline and ask them. Mine was up-- and I needed a new one regardless. That's why I never changed my name on it-- I was just waiting to renew.

Either way-- you will be "renewing" it anyway. I would probably follow those instructions.
