I'm thinking about selling some old jewelry that I never wear, and doubt that I ever will again.

one item in particular is a sapphire ring in a VERY heavy gold setting w/tapered diamond baguettes.

I know gold is high now, but what about precious stones?

when we sold our gold they actually popped out all of the stones, except one, and gave them back, said they weren't worth much. All of them were real stones but none were sapphire

mind if I ask what stones they said were not worth much?

I would love to tell you, but I have no idea. I know they are real because we asked, but they just said they weren't worth much. one was a light purple another light green and a red stone. they were probably birth stones but I'm not sure.

I think precious metals vary (usually running opposite in value of the US$) becuase they're viewed as a form of universal currency. Stones aren't... so they likely vary very little... only going up with inflation. I'm not 100% certain about this, but I am fairly certain....

Another interesting thing about jewelry is the value of antique jewelry.... suprisingly, while antique furniture is very valuable, antique jewelry seldom is worth more than an identical piece that is new....

oh, and most stones have little or no value unless they are near flawless and fairly large.... and outside of diamonds, valuable stones are primarily sapphire, ruby, emrald, large saltwater pearls, opal, very large flawless aquamarine, and blue zircons.... semi-precious like amethyst, citrine, peridot, garnet are seldom of any value....

well you were all right

the 2 stores I went to today couldn't care less about any stones, and weren't offering me much for the setting. I am very dissapointed.

meanwhile, if I were to go buy that ring today, I am sure it would cost me plenty!

unfortunately, when you buy jewelry you are paying for design as well...when you sell to these places you are just getting melt down prices

maybe I should buy my jewelry from now on on eBay. my Mom has purchased a lot of estate pieces on eBay for chump change. she's even sold a few pieces she didn't end up liking to a dealer at Tri County and made a profit Chat Icon

she's been able to return stuff to the sellers as well.

the prices of retail vs. eBay are insane!!
