Yeah, I find that annoying. Not that non-Aunts or Uncles can't be referred to as Aunt or Uncle, but it has to be agreed to by the parents. I remember a few "Aunts" and "Uncles" growing up. My DC don't have any self-imposed Aunts or Uncles, however. I would put a stop to it if anyone tried. I'm not a big fan of it, unless it is a very close friend of the family, and it is agreed to.

Ugh....not a fan of this either...sometimes I feel like it trivializes the role if you use it so often for all of your friends and can be confusing for kids...although, I guess I can see it if you have true lifelong friends (or godparents who aren't relatives) who are a huge part of your DC's life, but if you don't use it for that person and they keep forcing it on you, that's another story....kinda nervy IMO.
I know that its somewhat cultural too for all older adults to have the title so maybe that's the reason?

Re: i know i sound like a snob here but, why why why....
It's such a tough call because growing up we were always taught it was the proper thing to do in terms of referring to an adult that was a close family friend. My parents friends we always called Aunt and Uncle and there were not really our aunt and uncle. I don't really mind it. In fact, my kids refer to my brothers and sisters by just their names and don't really use the aunt and uncle before the name. They call my friends either Miss or Auntie.
In your case, since its not what you want, simply tell this Mary again that you'd prefer she not go by Aunt.

Re: i know i sound like a snob here but, why why why....
thanks see i never came out and told the perosn but you would think they would get the hint if everytine we are around them which isnt often (another reason why they shouldnt be an aunt, we live far away not that se doesnt want to see her) I say 'say hi to mary" "give mary the toy", "wave to mary".. does she imagine that she hears the word AUNT before her name? UGH..
now i do have her call my cousin Aunt becasue she is the babys 2nd cousin but to me that gets confusing and when i told my cousin she was so touched.... she didnt not take it upon herself...
