I know I'm going to get yelled at for even THINKING about this right now..

when do you start your xmas shopping???

and does anyone have any family rules about who to buy for or how much to spend??
I just don't get why every year we are spending a tun of $$ on gifts for our 30 year old and up siblings.
I think we are going to spread the word that this year kids only!!! or if everyone really wants to exchange gifts to keep it under $50 bucks.. we can't afford to go crazy anymore! Chat Icon

I JUST bought a book for DH on Amazon that I'm going to save for XMAS. I NEVER shop early!!

I was so proud of myself - now I have to make sure I

1. Don't give it to him sooner and
2. Remember to give it to him when XMAS comes!!

Re: I know I'm going to get yelled at for even THINKING about this right now..

I usually go to the outlets in Lancaster in November but this year I am not sure if we are going, but I usually start after the summer is over and then chip away. I don't buy everything in one shot.

We do buy for adults but for the siblings we don't get them, we only get the kids. We have 13 nieces and nephews and that's a lot to buy for so we don't do the adults. The only sibling I buy for is my brother since he is my only sibling. But DH has 4 and they all have kids so that's why we don't get them.

I love the christmas season it's my favorite!

November/December.

You know every year I say I am going to do it all year but I never do! The other day I saw some good stuff but I dont have the cash right now. Then when I do, all the good stuff is gone!

I've already started because I've seen things for people that would be perfect.

For SIL's we are getting them pics of their families from our wedding.

I already took care of one niece, 4 more to go.

I'm planning on finishing early with buying the new house and all.

Re: I know I'm going to get yelled at for even THINKING about this right now..

All I know is that (a) I am a VERY last minute holiday shopper and (b) the month of December KILLS us financially because not only do we have Christmas, between our families we have SOOO MANY December birthdays! Chat Icon (Dh's and mine included!)

This year, we really have to drastically cut back on gift giving.. we are going to have to move soon, and with a baby on the way we just cannot afford to go overboard like we normally do Chat Icon

As for siblings . I AGREE, we have SO MANY kids in the families that I REALLY cannot justify buying gifts for nieces/nephews and siblings too! THAT is (hopefully) going to stop soon as well! Chat Icon

I usually start around now.

Good luck with stopping the adult gift exchange. I tried that a few years ago and no one else was interested in buying just for the kids.

How come???? I think its the BIGGIST waste. They are all adults and can afford to buy whatever they want whenever they want..
I think I wouldn't mind as much if we spent a small amount but every year we wind up spending sooo much money b/c we find out they spent X amount on us or just b/c the only thing we can think of getting them happens to be $$$.

I completely agree. I think what happened is that I suggested it because I think like you do, but also I was a student at the time and money was tight. I am also the only one without kids. When I told my sister about it, she felt like since I buy for her kids, she thought it wouldn't be fair for me not to get anything, so she got me something. My brothers both basically said they didn't care if I didn't get them anything, but they were going to buy for me anyway. So the next year, I just went back to buying for everyone again.

I could have written this! This has always been EXACTLY why we still buy for siblings as well as our nieces/newphews.. because when I proposed the idea that we stop with the adults (since we were the only ones w/out kids) , my Bro/SIL and BIL/SILs felt badly that we would not be getting ANYTHING, (even though they said we didn't have to reciprocate for the adults, I felt funny NOT doing so)

NOW with our little bean on the way, even tho he/she will not be here by the holidays I think I will propose NO ADULTS CLAUSE again Chat Icon

I think the other piece of it in our family is that our parents aren't living. Christmas already feels so different, that I think some people don't want to make any more changes to traditions.

I am just beginning to start now.
And on DH's side of the family we do a secret santa and buy for the kids...$50 limit on both.

My family we do a secret santa with a $50 limit, no kids so that's not an issue!

I think keeping it to a limit or a secret santa is a GREAT idea. I know it wouldt fly on his side of the family. His parents go crazy when it comes to us.
I just cant afford it every yearChat Icon

I usually like to have my shopping done by October (I have to mail most of my presents out of state, so I like to do it early). But that won't happen this year with our late September wedding.
