I know it's been asked...

but what's everyone's opinion on coloring or highlighting your hair? I'm 8 weeks and my roots are bad. My Doc said it's prefectly fine to color or highlight. I only highlight and am considering going at about 12 weeks. What do you think?

Re: I know it's been asked...

I only highlight with foils and as long as it doesn't touch your scalp you should be fine. I have been doing it since I was 3 months and everything has been fine.

Re: I know it's been asked...

I'm going today for a low light with some highlights so that I don't have to get it done AS often...but I will still be getting it done throughout my pregnancy.

Re: I know it's been asked...

question - what part of the hair coloring process poses the problem?

Is it the peroxide or something else...

I ask because i normally use a demi-perm and that doesn't have peroxide in it...

Every dr will say something different so in the end, i would listen to your dr. and then decide whether or not you feel comfortable with what they say or not. Personally my dr said I could do either but said that if I wanted to wait until after my first trimester was over to do it for my own piece of mind then to do that. So that's what I did. I did a regular dye job at around 16 weeks.

Not sure, but it depends on who you ask.....some drs say there's no issue at all with any of it, just make sure you're in an area that's well ventilated as you're more prone to feel nauseas from fumes. Some say there haven't been enough tests run on current hair dyes so though there's no conclusive evidence that it's bad, there's none that says it's all good either. Then there's some that say only do highlights cause then if there is a danger, it's not touching your scalp. Years and years ago...like generations, hair dye used to be made with formaldehyde (it's not anymore) but I think it's one of those old wives tales and some people still believe that, so people are extra cautious. So, in the end, I guess it's another one of those things where you just make a decision based on your own research (your dr, books, etc).

Re: I know it's been asked...

I dyed my hair with my first and I have been doing now with my second. I just need to use hair dye with little or no peroxide and it has to be in a well ventialied place.

Thank you for that reply! I'll add it to my list of ?? for my appointment on Sunday!!!

I ask/worry because my hair was dyed on Tuesday (in a salon in the city - WELL ventilated). Wednesday, we found out I was pregnant.

My doctor said it was fine. I am will be 13 weeks tomorrow and will be getting my highlights done. I decided to wait until after 12 weeks.
I haven't gotten it done since april so you can imagine how my roots are!

Yup... that's what I'm doing. Moved my highlight appt to a month from today, which means I'll be over 12 weeks. OMG... I can't even imagine what my hair will look like by then... I hight light it blonde and my natural color is brown (with some grays sprouting up) Yuck!
At least it'll be nice for Thanksgiving

Re: I know it's been asked...

I used a vegetable dye when I was about 6 weeks. Its called Naturcolor. Then about 23 weeks I dyed at home and sat outside while it developed. I am going to try to hold off until they are here to do it again.

the same thing happened to me - i think we're ok. =0) the crappy thing is i hate my color now - it's much darker than i thought it would be and i miss my natural color. i also got an annoying cut (even though i hated the one before too, but it was easy to grow out). now i'm just looking at my hair as my pregnancy project and the dye/natural color line as a way to see how much time has passed... Happened to me too!! And the funny thing is I tested on a Friday night before my sisters bachlorette party and got a BFN. I then partied that night and got my hair highlighted the next day. That night after dying my hair- i tested again and it came back positive! I was freakin out BUT my doc said not to worry!!!

I have taken a break for the past 7 months. I just get trims now. I figure after the baby I will go all out and get an entire spa day--even thinking about going red again. Chat Icon
