I know this post will cause scandal and flames...but I'm really wondering what to do next...

So, we're on LI for the holidays.

MIL set up a PIP for DD in the room adjacent to ours. That was great...but from the very first night since we got here, we could NOT get her to sleep in there.

DH knew how I would feel about this decision, but...he put a pillow in the PIP.

Well, DD has been sleeping 12 hours like clockwork every single night, and is back to taking 2-hour naps during the day, which is more than she ever did at home. Translation: I think she is sleeping MUCH better with the pillow.

So...I find myself wondering, will she be ABLE to sleep without the pillow once we get back home? I'll admit, I was pretty miffed when I found out that DH did that, especially because he KNOWS that it could very well be dangerous, but it's obvious to me that she's sleeping infinitely better with it.

I've never been one to "ignore" safety warnings and things like that...DD sleeps with a sleep sack, etc. But I am really up in the air about what to do when we get back home, especially since she's sleeping SO much better now...maybe this was just what she needed... Chat Icon

What we did was put the pillow under the fitted sheet so DS could have the benefit of a pillow without the loose pillow. We used a small travel pillow.

How old is she? She is almost a year or a year, right?

I'd let her have a pillow. Christopher had one before he was 18 months....BRU or BBB makes a toddler pillowChat Icon

She turned a year on 12/12. I really hesitated because our ped. was ADAMANT about no pillows or loose blankets before age 2. I just can't help noticing that SHE seems much more happy and well-rested sleeping with the pillow Chat Icon

Yeah, it really is what you are comfortable with honestly.

My ped suggested CIO at 5 months, and my mom told me "Yes, and that's great, but he isn't in your house, so do what works for YOU and DS"

I should dig up a picture of the 9,875 things that were in DS cribChat Icon

No flames here.....when the twins were getting congested, I used a pillow, they loved it and slept better! We started out with one of those "Pillow Pets"

I love the idea of putting it under the sheet - I would try that. If not, I would think it's ok to put in since she's over a year. Chat Icon

Coming from someone who belly slept her daughter from day one, I'd say you should do what works as long as you feel comfortable.

I think it's fine. My kids always had blanket and small, toddler pillows (blankets from day 1 and pillows at about 1 year old).

Do what makes YOU comfortable. If your ok with it, I would go ahead.

With DS I was a nervous wreck and wouldnt have done it..although he did sleep with a pillow and blanket well before 2 yrs old.

Now with the twins, forget it..If you saw what they sleep with I'd be flamed left and right I'm sure. My comfortability level is higher and so I do what I need to do to get them to sleep and pray that all is ok and will be.

Just be "safe"about it and have no regrets.

I wouldn't worry too much about a pillow if the child can roll over. I know that there is still a risk after that point but the risk has to decrease after they become more mobile. My son uses a small travel size pillow now so it is not fluffed all around him. He can still breath if he sleeps on his side.

Same here. take pediatrician suggestions as guidelines, but ultimately do what works best for your child and you.

Same here. Firm mattress, no pillow though.

I do think a pillow at a year old is fine. Although if she were an infant & unable to lift her head, I'd definitely be hesitant.

This is what we did too, but used a regular pillow, not a travel one. It fit completely across the crib mattress.
