I need a handyman
I have a VERY small job that I need done and am getting INSANE estimates from contractors.
I have a cape and the upstairs is one giant bedroom that my 2 sons share. Now that they are older, they want their own rooms, so I need someone to literally construct one wall between their rooms. Only one needs a door. I measured the space and went to Lowes and priced out the materials and its under $300. But for some reason I am getting estimates into the thousands. No electric or plumbing... literally 2x4's and sheetrock.
Does anyone here know anyone?

So you need the framing, Sheetrock and a door? That’s definitely way more than $300 with Sheetrock you have to remember you will need the taping and spackling, sanding and you will need to insulate between that wall as well, it’s not as simple as putting up the wood and Sheetrock. You also need to remember the person doing the job needs to be paid for their time. If they are a licensed contractor they need to be sure what they are doing is to code by law. Usually this runs about $1200-$1500. My dad is a contractor and granted we didn’t have to pay anything but just resheetrockint our bedroom with insulation was $800 in materials and my room is small! If you are reliably getting the same quote from various people then I think what they are quoting is accurate. Try getting like 4-5 quotes

Contractors are going to give you the price that makes it worthwhile for them. There is a lot of work on Long Island. So why are they going to do your small project for cheap, when they could probably get a larger project, have work for a longer period of time, and make more profit. I work in a trade, and I know when we're busy, we high ball quotes. In the off-season if we slow down, then we might be willing to work with you more on price.
Also, the price of materials are rising quickly, so the contractors may be protecting themselves in case you sit on the quote for a few months.
Also, even after you get a quote, you may have a hard time getting someone to show up for this size job. I know numerous people who have tried to get small jobs done, and even after getting a quote, the contractor puts them off because better/larger jobs come along.

Re: I need a handyman
No insulation necessary as it’s an interior wall and I can tape/spackle myself. I literally need a wall framed out and sheetrocked. It’s a few hours TOPS. I think I may attempt this myself. I’ve called around and it seems like no one is interested in a small job that will take a few hours. I was hoping to find someone who does odd jobs “on the side” or someone who knows how to do these things... which was why I posted here. Everyone knows someone I figured. Guess not. Thanks anyway!
