I need advice

Okay so I took this job last July, (first few days into the month) and I have a lot of experience in this field, but it is not what I went to school for. Needless to say I always thought of this job as an in between job till I found what I went to school to do. When I was hired, there were 2 other people working for the company, besides the bosses. One full time and one part and then my position. The other full time employee makes almost $50,000 and has full medical coverage. The other employee works 3 days a week 8 hours a day.. Not sure what she made. The part time employee gave 2 week notice and never showed back up again. She had her reasons, whatever.. Needless to say, all her work fell on me, since the other full time employee strictly does work for only 1 part of the company. I on the other hand had to begin to do 2 jobs all of a sudden. I did it and never complained. My boss never looked for someone new for 3 months! And even after explaining that I was getting bogged down, it still took awhile. In the end he hired someone great!! But half the work never transferred back to that job. A few reasons, the person wasn't trained for what the job entailed and it was our "busy" season so there wasn't any time to train him, and then more recently we come to find out he re-enlisted with the army and is leaving June 1!! (and I have no hard feelings towards him for that, thank God he goes, so I don't have to) but were in this spot again, and now I have to take back half the work that I was finally able to give him. Fast fwd to last week, and my boss informs me he will not be hiring anyone elseChat Icon and never made any mention on how I will be able to do all this work!! He clearly can't give half to me, half to the other worker, she just would not be able to handle it, and he knows it, as it is I have to help her sometimes, as if I wasn't busy enough!

The other part of this is, I get paid x amount, which for the industry its ok, not great and since I've had to do so much more work and learn a lot, I'm a more qualified worker now and according to what job posting I have seen I could easily make 10-15,000 more per year. When I was hired, he offered x with benefits. I already had benefits that only cost 375 for cobra, his benefits would have cost 500. I offered to continue with my cobra and he could pay that instead of his benefits. But I only needed them for 5 months, since that's when my Dh was able to put me on his plan that's fully paid for. At that time, the other worker had given notice and I should have asked for a raise then, clearly saving him a lot of $ between my insurance and double the work all for the same pay. I posted then and everyone said no, don't ask for a raise....

Do I now have grounds to stand on? Besides my 1 year is in 1 month, I'm completely doing double the work, I have to put up with a lot of stress now since I'm always behind.

But there's so much I hate about this job. My boss is a complete jerk, always says such mean degrading stuff, and its just who he is, when I tell him I don't like him talking to me that way he laughs and says I can't take a joke, and continues to do it. The other part is, were probably moving soon, about 45 mins east of where I work now, and I just don't see the commute being worth it at all!! With traffic I'd have to leave my house so early and get home so late, for a job I hate.

Do I ask for the raise until I find something better?? Is that fair? Or do I just say nothing, find something else, and be done with the nonsense?

Sorry its so longChat Icon

Re: I need advice

Honestly I would start looking for a new job now. Sounds to me like they are taking advantage of you and since your moving anyway I would look and get the heck out of there.

If they gave you more money and then you moved, would you still keep the job? I think fi the answer is yes, then ask for a raise--it doesnt hurt to ask..

goodluck!!!

I agree with this. Also if you get the raise, you can more easily ask for more money at your new job since you will be at a different pay rate.

I wouldn't stay there though. Ask for the raise, start looking, land something and give your notice.

see that's what I was thinking at least I'd have that higher salary to use when looking at other jobs, and if it took awhile to find the right job, at least in the mean time I'd be compensated, I was just afraid it would burn my bride with him, and If I ever needed him as a referral, I would think he would feel that that was really unprofessional of me to ask for a raise then leave

I would look for another job.

At my company, we do a try & buy. We see if we can get along without replacing the person. After 3 months, we give a raise if it's working out. The last thing we want is to give a raise to the person & then have to hire another person because it's not working out. That's common.

It doesn't sound like you're happy at the job. From what I've seen throwing money at an unhappy employee only lasts a few months until they're looking again. You need to address their career growth, give them say in things, make them part of the process. It's not there - at least in a small company that you've described.

I would ask for a raise at the 1 year mark. Start preparing the reasons and argument why you deserve a raise now. it also doesn't hurt to start looking.
