I need advice, and for someone to talk me down.
There is a girl in DS's daycare class that is ALWAYS sick. I am talking yellow/green snot every day.
Today she had green snot running down her face (um why don't they clean it? ) and she also has a bad cough and she is STILL there. At first I was just a little upset but as I think about it more and I am just getting SO mad that
a. her parent still brings her in when she is so obviously sick and
b. no one at daycare seems to care! why aren't they sending her home???
So please, please talk me down. My first instinct is to call the asst. director to discuss this... should I? Is this any of my business?

this drives me crazy. I understand parents NEED to work, but I think some NEED to stay home and take care of their snotty kids. Makes me crazy. And, yes knowing myself I would call and ask.
Sidenote. My cousins are all sick, their whole school is sick, so much so that notes were sent home last week that they may actually close the school.

Its absolutely your business. Do they have a "policy" on sickness?

It is absolutely your business! Doesn't your day care have a "no green snot rule"? DS's school does! Call and speak with the director expressing your concerns that your DS will end up sick then you will be out of work (and if you get fired form not being there, you no longer need day care )

Re: I need advice, and for someone to talk me down.
That's so tough. No child should ever be brought to school in that condition. But sometimes parents really have NO other choice. No sick/personal/vacation time, no one else to watch their sick kid, etc.
But regardless of their personal situation, it should not mean your child(ren) should have to pay the consequences. I would most definitely put a call into the daycare. You are not paying them all that money for germs and bacteria. You are paying them to ensure your child's well being is put first. And clearly it isn't since there is a little girl with green boogies running down her face playing with the very same toys Luca does.

I would def call...one time I think OK, but all the time..NO...I totally understand that some parents can't take off, and it's really hard to find someone, but if it's an ongoing issue, it's not only hurting their child but other kids as well!!!

The daycare has a no yellow/green snot rule. I'm willing to be more lentient about yellow... but not with a bad cough!
I am calling now, thanks.

Re: I need advice, and for someone to talk me down.
Update:
So I called. Apparently one of the teachers recently said something to the asst. director about the child's cough getting worse and they are contacting the parents.
What I was told by the asst. director is that they do try and keep on top of any child with a yellow/green snot issue... but often they get notes from the child's ped saying there is nothing wrong with them and at that point there is not a whole lot they can do.
She did thank me for calling and said that I should never hesitate to voice my concerns.
Unfortunately, I know in my heart that it's too late and DS will more than likely get sick from this child anyway. As will all the other kids in the class!

Wow, what a lousy loop hole. A note from the ped saying their fine and there is nothing left for the daycare to do.
You should propose to create a "sick room" so these infected children stay away from the well children.
I'm sorry you are dealing with this, LB! Hopefully Luca thinks the girl has cooties and stays far, far, far away!

I would absolutely talk to the director. That parent is irresponsible and should be keeping her sick child home. I can't stand people who do this to their poor kids. It's preschool its not like they're missing anything that's going to change their lives. I am equally p' od at my school district who are NOT calling parents if a child has diarrhea or has vomited! I am besides myself if it was my child's school I would be livid! Inm order ot protect your child from getting sick I would def. say something.

Re: I need advice, and for someone to talk me down.
Honestly, you don't necessarily know what the cause of the mucus and cough are. My dd went to school with yellow mucus and a cough but she isn't sick. She has issues with drainage that causes it to come out of her nose and causes a drip hence a cough. She is getting surgery for this problem but she can't stay home because of it. Bases on some of the pp, I"m irresponsible and a bad mom but that isn't the case because she isn't sick.
As long as the daycare is on top of it and has a great cleaning policy, there isn't much more you can do about it.

This is part of the reason I was concerned with calling. I don't want to be a "tattle tale" but as a mom I have to look out for my own DS, right? I have no idea whether or not this child is really sick. And if she's not, that's great. Snot is gross but it's not always a source of contagion.
I'm glad I called - and that the asst. director was able to (somewhat) reassure me. But I would also hope that if there was a child in DS's class with the same issues as your DD that the daycare would let me know, so I know I have nothing to worry about.

I don't think there is anything wrong with calling. You're a parent and should always call if you have a concern. I let the directors and teachers know what was going on for that reason - so any parent that might be concerned would know what the situation is.
My post was to let others know that there might be situations in which a child is not sick and has a condition that causes symptoms.

Re: I need advice, and for someone to talk me down.
First of all, any doctor who can say for certain a child is not sick, IMO, isn't being very cautious. My ped told us they will never write a letter saying DH isn't sick....it's just not feasible to say with 100% certainty.
With that, I think you did the right thing by calling....especially this time of year, we have to do all we can do to help these kids stay well....I can't stand seeing sick kids in class, and when I do I ask that my DS hands be washed more and that they try to keep him away from the "BOOGIE KID".....

She may just have allegies. There is a girl is ds's class that is also always congeted with a runny nose. I asked one of the teachers & they were told it's because of her food allergies & other allergies & she's not actually sick.
Alexa sometimes gets yellow green snots and its actually from her reflux... she's not sick, its just the constant refluxing and it causes nasal irritation and hence the yucky nose and constant coughing....
Maybe the little girl has reflux???
