Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
Are you a member of Costco? they have independant eyedoctors there (not affiliated with Costco) and the exams are reasonable, and they have a large selection of frames that are pretty cheap. My glasses I got there were $140 (compared to old glasses I got at Sterling Optical that were $440!).

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
do you happen to know whether you have astigmatism? that is more $$ for lenses than straight forward near or far-sightedness
I believe lenscrafters occassionally has a $99 for frames + lenses.... but it seems to be only once or twice a year
It can't hurt to get the $18 eye exam.....

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
I believe walmart has an eye store attached to some of their locations, I think the one in Setauket does. I'm fairly sure they have 40 dollar glasses there.

yeah, definitely try to seek out those $99 promos... I believe an eye exam is not included, but a basic version of the lenses ARE included...
my frames only cost $40 on vacation, but the lenses when I got home cost almost $300

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
When I didn't have insurance, I use to always go to Davis Vision. They have a HUGE selection of glasses & some are not that pricey...

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
Costco also does exams. My husband has a astigmatism as well and he gets his contacts there now for much cheaper.

I was just going to say this. I think I've noticed glasses at the one in Riverhead also.

I LOVE WALMART and their vision stuff!!! I didn't have vision insurance for a while and always went there, even for my astigmatism.

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
Wize Eyes or Eyeglass Factory Outlet in Hicksville. At EFO you can get glasses for $40. I get my daughter's extra glasses there and she constantly gets compliments. Heck, the last designer pair I got from Pearl for almost $500, broke within 6 weeks and had to be repaired.

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
Wize Eyes is good, Walmart is expensive IMO. The exam is cheap but the frames are a lot. I order mine from 39dollarglasses.com now and have no issues. A co-worker of mine also gets them there.

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
Unfortunately that $49 price they show at Wize Eyes is only the basic lense and frame. I have really bad eyes and an astigmatism and they still charged me $250 for the lenses only at Wize Eyes. It was no bargain whatsoever. I asked about the signs they have promoting $49 complete pairs and she just said those are for peope who barely need glasses. It was nice to get the $18 exam though.

There is a place in Brooklyn called Factory Eyeglass Outlet on Nostrand Avenue and Quentin Rd. They have affordable exams and glasses.

Re: I need glasses and have no insurance
Pearle eye exams are $59 - I just posted a rave about the one in Bohemia. Dr. Miller is OUTSTANDING!!!!!! he doesn't rush through the exam and takes the time to answer all questions and lets you know about things to look out for as you get older. Highly recommend!
