I NEED HELP - LI/NYC teachers - please help

I am in nyc and currently teaching in a leave replacement postion - i still have my info on OLAS -- I was contacted today by a principal wanting to set up a a screening interview for a leave replacement position in Nassau....

Do I go? If I go, do I leave NYC? I don't know what to do and I have to respond to this email tonight...
thankyou

I would go to see what its all about. I know the principal at your NYC school kinda messed around with you about your position.

Btw how have been things since?

So check it out, overall the LI leave replacement might be a better oppotunity or not, but it doesnt hurt to try and see.

thanks epbees - its been busy trying to juggle my son, his caretaking, the new school w/the new rules. the teachers at my school are really nice. i like my kids alot, there are a lot of things that i don't agree with, but i'm only 5 days in.

i don't know if this position would offer benefits, which my current school was able to get me, nor do i know the salary - but i think it might be good to get a foot in the door...not sure if it's better to spend a year in nyc or nassau to get my foot in....

the email was short and sweet and didn't contain much info.

thanks for your reply and concern -

how's your new gig going?

Well given your situation and the need for benefits maybe staying in NYC would be better for the meantime, of course check out what this other leave replacement has to offer. Plus I always read ppl on this board saying that LI schools like to see experience in the city over a LR on LI. I would say Weigh your options though.

I'm glad you like your school for the most part.(I don't think there is a perfect school out there without something we might find wrong) My school is going good, once I figure out the scheduling kinks and whip those kids into shape I forsee a really good school year going by. Thanks for asking!Chat Icon

sounds good that you're happy and forsee postive things for this year, you deserve happiness.

i can kick myself so many times b/c i had the greatest prinicpal and staff at my last school - it was a brand new facility with the latest technology and now i have to work around roaches and mice..ewww.

i hate the schedule at this school, there isn't much flexiblity and it was like the soldier parade today w/a different coach/principal/assist. principal walking in, looking at their watch, looking at my schedule, looking at their watch and then observing my teaching. yeah, i was off my sched - but i'm not going to rush my kids who aren't getting a concept to flow into the next subject when there are children struggling - sorry, it's not going to happen with me - i also see that alot of the teachers are scared to have a voice at the school or else they fear repricussions..

it's a job right now, a foot in the door, experience and benefits, but the longer i'm here, the more i realize that maybe the fiasco earlier in the month was worth it in the long haul - kwim?

thanks again for responding to my ?

have a great night

i say go on the interview on LI.. it might be a year long leave and a foot in the door. i think by taking that job would give you an "in" possibly with that district without screwing yourself out of something in NYC. you got jerked around by them, so i think you would be fine if you needed to look for a NYC job for the next school year.

thank you - i hope it would lead to a position in the district - it would also help with my son b/c my parents watch him at thier house in nassau and then some days they watch in bklyn, either way they're commuting and/or i am so that my son is in their care. if i get this lr position, i can see my son every night - which is huge b/c sometimes he sleeps at their house to help with the commuting - and i won't have to worry about if they can make it to me or if i have to leave him with them

thanks for your help donegal - i appreciate it

Thanks for saying i deserve happiness, I myself am used to dissapointment so its a new feeling for me.

what happened with you old school? you can FM me if you like.

Yea NYC schools are like that, not much flexibility and constant timing of everything. I could go on and on about having a voice, repercussions and such at a NYC school but thats not want this thread was forChat Icon

you have a good night too, hopefully in whatever you decide to do it works out as a benefit for ya Chat Icon

i hope so, with all of the drama surrounding my current position, i keep worrying that i made the wrong choice by coming back -- the problem is, my parents are older, he was their 1st grandchild and i felt horrible for being so far away from them. they are getting to enjoy him now and he loves the attention, so i know it is a good decision, it will just take time for everything to work itself out.

thanks for the words of encouragement!Chat Icon
