I need help - outfit for christening on Sunday

So, here's the problem and I will preface it with the fact that I have ZERO fashion sense. Chat Icon

I have a Baptism to attend on Sunday that I need to dress for. I am not happy with my body right now, so that doesn't help. I am way out of shape... mostly in my stomach area. I kind of look like a barrel these days instead of my former hourglass look. I have a very large chest, which is the only thing that keeps me from looking completely like a sausage in a casing. I'm 5'4", probably around a 12/14 (depends on the design/fit of the waistline... that's my most difficult thing to fit due to the aforementioned barrel I've become)

Add to the fact that the party is going to be in a backyard (no tents, no fans) with a lot of trees and uneven lawn. Supposed to be low-to-mid 80s and sunny on Sunday so far.

I need something that is going to keep me from sweating like I'm participating in a hot yoga class (but that won't stick to me when I ultimately do) and maybe might even be a *little* flattering. Oh, and preferably fabric that will survive copious amounts of bug spray that will be applied to keep the copious amount of ticks at bay.

What would you wear? Dress? Pants? Skirt? Flats? Wedges?

Oh, and I need to be able to go to a store or order from somewhere that can get it to me by Saturday. Because procrastination is my middle name.

Pictures or links would be amazing if you have them, since--as I mentioned earlier--I am utterly fashion challenged.

Tall order, I know. Chat Icon

You made me laught, since I understand exactly how you feel (i.e.
feeling like a "barrel" and "sausage in casing"). Have you looked at wrap dresses? I always find them flattering and comfortable, while making me feel a little sexy at the same time. Fit and flare dresses are also nice, but sometime they make me feel huge. Also, a lined sheath dress is also very flattering (I like Lauren and Calvin Klein).

Also, being that you feel "fashion challenged," these dresses usually only require some jewelry, i.e. a statement necklace, to spruce it up. Honestly, since the dresses are usually basic, wear a necklace that is bolder than you would usually wear.

Backyard? Wear a flowy maxi dress with wedges or flats.

Definitely! If it were me I'd order like 10 dresses from amazon & return what I didn't like. There are some pretty maxi dresses with slits, which will keep you a little cooler.

I agree with the Dressbarn suggestion for lots of choices at reasonable prices.

If you prefer pants, I would do the Alfani capri pants from Macy's (there are a few threads about them on here) with a flowy, dressy-ish tank top. Maybe something like one of these (more to show the shape than the actual style) :

Top 1

Top 2

With any outfit, I'd do wedges - I always prefer a little height over a flat shoe

Definitely a Maxi Dress! Lightweight.

You want something that hits the smallest part of your waist, right below the bust line and flows out..target always has a nice selection if you need something quick.

It doesn't even have to be a dress dress. You can even do a slim skirt with a cascade top to give you a longer line and hide the problem areas. ITA with Dress Barn, it's not expensive either. Good Luck!

I'm a 5'3 busty size 8/10, I think maxi dresses look like a tent on me. (just my opinion).

I agree that maxi dresses are not flattering on everyone.
A wrap dress is more universally flattering imo

Thank you for all the links and suggestions! I am going shopping after work...wish me luck lol! I will check out all the styles suggested. I'm leaning towards picking up the Alfani pants whether I wear them or not... I need new work pants and those have gotten so many raves on here lol.

I'll let you all know what I come up with. Thanks for the help!

So, I went with the Alfani pants (which I love, btw. Need to buy more for work!) and a random long-ish, flowy tank top that I found at TJ Maxx with my black wedges.

It was hot, and I was running up and down stairs all day and setting up/cleaning up the food table... so wearing pants didn't help keep me cool, but it definitely prevented "chub rub" lol so for that I was grateful. I also switched to flip flops about 15 minutes after we got into the backyard. Good thing, too... because even in flip flops, I nearly broke my face on the uneven ground filled with hidden, grass filled divots left over from their dearly departed dog.

But... it's over and I survived lol! Thank you all!

The Alfani pants come in capris too- not sure if you saw. I love them for summer and they come in some really nice, bright summer colors. Maybe a little bit cooler?

Yep... I got the capris. They were great! I actually didn't realize they came in regular length? lol I will have to look for those for when summer is--sadly and unfortunately--over.

I loved that they didn't have buttons or anything... I think they'll be great work pants. I spend a lot of time at work crouched down in tiny, cramped mechanical rooms bent over a laptop on the floor - you'd be surprised at how uncomfortable zippers, buttons and those little metal hook-y, slide-y type fasteners get when they start to dig into your sausage gut Chat Icon

Side question on the pants - I only wore the pants on Sunday so far... the waistband didn't roll at all then, but was wondering if they ever started to roll after wearing them a few times? And I'm thinking wash on cold and hang to dry? Think that's the best route?

I have pairs that I have had for years and they hold up great. They never start to roll on me at all.
I wash in cold, on delicate, and hang to dry.
They keep their shape beautifully

I have a bunch of the pants that I wear to work all the time - never had an issue with the waist band rolling. And yes, I wash in cold and hang to dry. They hold up really well - colors haven't faded, they haven't stretched out - still look great.

I am so excited to hear this! I think I might have to go get a bunch more, maybe even in different colors. I generally only wear black or grey pants to work, but some of the colors look so nice... and they aren't expensive.

And just another note - the Jockies Skimmies slip shorts are great for under dresses, to prevent "chub rub" - they're very light and comfy - no compression, so they don't suck you in, but definitely work well under summer dresses
