I need some advice....
I taught in a private school in NYC for four years. I recently moved to Long Island. I am currently looking for a teaching job on LI. I know the competition is tough out here. Do you think I would have better luck finding a job if I actually went to a school and gave them my resume in person instead of sending it via email or by snail mail?

I don't think that would help. Most school districts don't even accept resumes that are mailed anymore. Have you looked on OLAS?

I agree...it's about luck and knowing someone on LI...Have you tried NYC Public Schools?

you can go door-to-door with your resumes in NYC schools... the principals can hire you without having to go through the district office, as is the case on LI schools. that's how i got my job in NYC.... walked right in with my resume and was hired the next day.
don't give up on LI though.... there are jobs. sometimes it's who you know or time put in (i.e. TA, leave replacement, etc.) but it's not impossible. i got a job on LI in a district after only looking for a job for one year.

saw the ad in the NY times. applied and sent in my resume and cover letter to the district office and to the building principal. i had been a TA in the district 5 years prior and i was hoping they would remember me. they did. i interviewed (along with about 20 other people) and got the job. i was lucky.
