Re: I need some new songs...some folky, parisian, canadian, songs...
Check out "I'll Kill her" by Soko, available on iTunes, its a little ditty about love gone wrong by a cool French folk singer. Here's a blurb:
SoKo (born Stéphanie Sokolinski) is a French singer and actress. She was born in Bordeaux in France to a Polish family and has been called Soko as far back as she can remember.[1] She has appeared in several French movies, and got her start as a singer after she asked the director if she could sing on screen.[1]
In 2007 she got a big hit in Denmark with her song I'll Kill Her after the radio program The Black Boy Scouts started hyping the song.[2] The song reached number one on the chart of the Danish version of the iTunes Store and was the number one song in rotation on radio.[2][1] The song is also a hit in Australia, being played on high rotation on Triple J radio[3] (where it placed number nine in Triple J Hottest 100 2007 music poll), in Belgium being played by Studio Brussel and Radio 1, and in The Netherlands, being picked up by 3FM radio station. In October 2007 her music was featured in Stella McCartney’s fashion show in Paris.[4]
She still has not put out a full album but only the five song EP Not Sokute, but nevertheless has had sold out concerts in Denmark.[1]

What about St Etienne, they aren't French, but their name is. They do like sort of soft rock dance music in a European fashion. I love them.

Thao Nguyen? She isn't foreign but sometimes sounds like she is. Lovely folksy songs.

What about Seu Jorge? He sang all the cover songs on Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - only I think he was singing Portugese...

Kirsty MacColl sings a couple of songs in French on Kite. "Complainte pour Ste. Catherine" is my favorite of the two.
And there's always the Pop Romantique collection - came out in the 1990s and it's 90's alternative bands like Luna, Heavenly, and the Magnetic Fields covering dreamy french pop songs. It's lovely and you can probably find it used online for a dollar:

This sounds great! Luna is one of my all-time favorite bands. In fact, I was going to suggest Dean & Britta, but neither are French, even though they sometimes sing in French when covering Serge Gainsbourg...

First of all...Kirsty MacColl...the biggest loss for music in such a long time. I loved her and she is really really missed. Second of all...how strange, today I had like a whole string of Magnetic Fields songs pop up on my ipod in the car on the way home! I love Stephin Merritt!

Right, of course, I love "bonnie & clyde"! I think I probably could still recite it, even though I don't know French.
Yeah, the Pop Romantique collection is fun - it has Magnetic Fields, Apples in Stereo, Luna, Ivy, Air, Ladybug Transistor (pretty much the same band as the Essex Green if you know them).
