I need to make a potty training post

Ugh. I hate this.

Christopher peed on the bathroom floor this morning. He was SO proud of himself b/c he was in the correct roomChat Icon

So, I decided to put him in undies, he has been in just them for an hour and we already had pee in the first pair. I am asking him constantly if he needs to go, and putting him on every 20 minutes.

He was just begging me for a diaper, like beeggggiiing me and DH and I said "You need to go pee pee on the potty if you have to go" and he told us "NO potty is for Mommy and Daddy, not for BIG BOY"Chat Icon Chat Icon

Part of me REALLY says he isn't ready and part of me thinks I need to just deal with it and let him keep peeing himself

HELP

He will be 3 on April 26th

Re: I need to make a potty training post

Boy I wish I had advice for you because we are going through the EXACT same thing at my house. DS will be 3 in April and STILL not potty trained. He KNOWS what to do he just doesn't do it. Especially the poo poo. He will pee on the potty no problem when WE ask HIM to go, but he won't tell us when he has to. Poo poo is a whole other monster. He will go a tiny little bit and then as soon as I get the pull up or diaper back on him he fills it up. I don't know what to do anymore......

So, I'm looking for advice on this as well and hope others have some for us!

Re: I need to make a potty training post

Well, we are working on potty training my 4 year old right now Chat Icon BUT we have made some real improvements and are getting there slowly.

It sounds to me that he may not be ready. He has to WANT to train or it just won't work. If he is resistent to it, I say just let it go for a bit, and then bring it up again in a few days.

Is he physically ready yet? Wakes up dry? Longer periods throughout the day of dryness? Uncomfortable when wet or poopy? If yes to all of these, he is ALMOST there. He just needs want to use it and he will be trained in no time.

What about rewards? We told Ry that he could get this Thomas the train for his train table if he went pee on the potty... that was a huge motivation for him. We tried the m&ms but he really doesn't care about those. What about keeping a new toy in the bathroom and he can only play with it while on the potty? Like a new book or something. They also suggest to change the diaper from now on in the bathroom so they understand that this is where we go to the bathroom and will become familiar it.

And of course the books and DVDs. Elmos potty time is a big hit in our house.

I took a class on this at DS' school so these were all the tips they offered. I hope some of them work for you!

Also, maybe a reward chart? He may be too little, but that may work too! My DS loves stickers and his teacher at school has success with giving a sticker everytime he uses the potty. He feels very proud when he goes and gets his sticker and wears it for all to see!

Lose the underwear and the diapers. Let him run around naked from the waist down. He will get it. If he doesn't in a few days, he is not ready and I wouldn't stress about it and try again later. Potty training should only take a few days if they are ready.

I agree. I did this my DD last spring when the weather was warmer & she was trained right away.

Re: I need to make a potty training post

Honestly Kate I am of the mindset that things like this should ALWAYS be child-led.

With Mads I got the Elmo potty DVD and let her watch a bunch of times. I also let her in the bathroom with me when I had to "go". We did alot of talking about it before even attempting to put her on the potty.

One day we bought one of those potty chairs and that was it for her- she decided she wanted to try it. She is now pretty consistent about using the potty, but will still pee in diapers/pull-ups if she's wearing them. She'll only use the potty on her own without reminders if she's naked.

Poop isn't even mentioned, although she DID take a crap on the floor last night, so I suppose that's progress in that she didn't NEED a diaper.Chat Icon
