My doctor recommended this too, because DS hasn't started gaining weight yet. He started at 8 lbs 3 oz and is now 7 lbs 6 oz. We give him one bottle of formula at night only, and it's working out great. DH can feed him, and it makes him pass out too...which lets me sleep a little. The lactation nurses at the hospital freaked me out, but my pediatricians are great. I trust them to know what I'm doing is ok. Hope this helps! Good luck!

I felt the same way, I would have been supplementing a long time ago had I found a formula that agreed with Noah...don't worry about it...the BF police would tell you to do what you think is the right thing...and the right thing is making sure your baby is getting enough to eat. Don't worry about it!

The best thing I can tell you is to do what's best for you. If it's not the BF police, it will be the sleep police, and if not either or both of those, it will be the solids police...the list goes on. As mom's we have to remember that we need to do what's best for our own children and not someone else's.

I'm not sure who the BF police is, but I think sometimes those who've BF know it can be difficult and try to offer as much support as they can.

With that being said, I EBF my first and my second have been supplementing from about a month old. He's 7.5 months now and perfectly healthy. For me, it's been a lifesaver with two kids under two years old. I cannot always just BF depending on the needs of my first.

I had latching issues also....she NEVER did. The BF nazi forced her so hard on me in the hospital that I was so unhappy....I kept trying and she just didn't want any part of it.

There is NOTHING wrong with supplementing or doing all formula!

Ignore the BF police! Do what your instincts tell you is right. If your DS needs some formula to complete his eating schedule, then there's no problem with giving him some. Just by giving him breastmilk for the majority of his feedings, you're doing a great thing. Everyone agrees that formula is not as perfect as breast milk, but it sure is better than no food at all if you are out of breast milk!!!

Have your DH give him the bottle. It is a nice bonding experience for them and you can pump and then take a nap or freshen up. I cried like a baby when I needed to supplement because I didnt have enough milk and if happened to be at a time that DH was home he gave him the bottle an then I was ok. I stoped BF and DH is on formula and after a day I was ok.

Re: I need to supplement but I am so nervous...

Let's try to get your supply up a bit more. How often are you pumping? Try eating oatmeal, drinking a full glass of water with each session and NO diet.
I needed to use formula for 4 weeks...I hated it. So I totally understand your feelings. Try to think of the formula as just a helper till your supply is better.
Let me know if I can help you at all. I have been there done that.
