I read that some of you suffer with PCO; Re: Daughter

She plans to TTC next Oct. Presently she thinks she has an ovarian cyst, and has had one in the past, but her family Dr. told her it wouldn't keep her from conceiving. What have your Dr.'s told you about this? Thanks!!!! Mary

Having a cyst every once in awhile is not the same as having polycystic ovaries. The term "polycystic" is actually a misnomer. In PCOS, follicles start to develop, but never actually mature and release an egg, therefore the woman does not ovulate.

PCOS is almost like a blanket statement for a ton of different ovarian issues that tend to (but not always) lead to anovulation.

just because you have cysts doesnt mean you have PCO.
just because you dont have cysts doesnt mean that you don't have PCO.

every person manifests PCOS a little differently. whether or not it will effect her ability to get pregnant depends on many factors, especially her hormone levels. she would need to have bloodwork and sono done by a doctor (preferable a reproductive endocrinologist and not an ob/gyn) to determine whether or not she would need meds to help her conceive.

good luck to her!

PS Do you think, since she will also be an older Mom, 37, that she should go to a Specialist dealing in high risk pregnancies? I have no clue on "some" things re: today's pregnany issues, ie., what's changed treatment wise, etc. since it's been awhile since I was a nurseMom. Thanks!!! Mary

Just curious... are there issues that would be cause for her to go to a high risk Dr.?

I'm just asking because I was 38 when my DD was born and 39 when my DS was born. I was never considered high risk due to my age.

Both my kids were conceived via IVF, but due to a multitude of issues.

Well, diabetes runs in the family, and pregnancy can sometimes result in elevated blood sugar; Course, she won't know that until she gets pregnant, whether that will happen to her. My understanding was that older Moms fall into a higher risk category. Appreciate your post!!!! Mary
