I'm a city kid. It's one thing for a parent to give you specific directions on how to get home. 9 years old and manhattan are not the age or place to just throw the bird out of the nest. A little direction is a good thing!!!

I don't think 9 is young enough to be traveling ANYWHERE alone. I don't care how much the kid begs, she's the parent for a REASON

I completely agree

She is SO lucky that this child did not get abducted, or HARMED by some sicko, that he did not get hurt, and that no one called CPS!

Boy, I'm still trying to get my 9 year old to learn to look both ways before crossing the street! Nutty!

Well, I don't think that letting a 9 year old ride the subway alone is such a big deal, but I just can't understand her logic. If he's too irresponsible to take care of a cell phone, how in hell is he going to get home? All kids are different, I know some 9 year olds who are more mature than some 20 somethings I know, and they could lead you across the country with a map, so I think it depends on the kid, but she doesn't sound so sure of her own kidChat Icon

I read this, I thought it was an okay thing she did. My parents let me traipse all over NYC when I was 12. If she knew her child was responsible enough to do this, so be it. When I was growing up my friends in NYC all went to school on the subway when they were 9/10 years old. Would I let my child do it? If I thought my child were savvy and street smart enough, yes I would.

I worry more about suburban traffic than anything else.

eta, I think the woman who wrote this is a journalist. She went onto TV to talk about kids being wrapped in cotton wool.

WOW! I think that is like her very laid back and wouldnt ever take a risk with my child that way, and I myself am more then not laid back when it comes to giving my only 1 yr old independence.

I think that children who use the subway to get to school are TAUGHT how to use it, and its not the same as leavign a kid somewhere and " hoping " he would ask someone for directions..hopefully someone who wont abduct him Chat Icon

In Surburbia we have crossing guards, stop signs and not 1 million people leaving a few mile radius.

Re: I saw this on a blog - I thought I was laid back, but not THIS laid back!!!

I am shocked that I don't think this is a huge deal....

I grew up on the UES in Manhattan and went to private school, lived in my little bubble. I remember that at 9, I was allowed to stay home alone for a little, at 10, I was allowed to walk a few blocks to the bakery or the supermarket, and at about 11, I was taking two buses to get to school in the morning alone (usually with a friend- but sometimes alone.), playing with friends in Central Park.

I remember it being cabs my mother had an issue with- I was not allowed to take cabs alone until I was about 13 years old. Mass transit was fine; being alone with a strange man in his car- not fine.

eta: I was a good girl; gave my parents little grief growing up. Generally, did as I was told.

I had a similar upbringing but I lived walking distance to school. BUT my parents always went through HOW to get from point A to point B - it wasn't an experiment to see if I'd figure it out!!!!

exactly...a lot of things like taking subway to school etc is because they HAVE TO....Not much of a choice.

Doing it to see what happens? IMO is foolish and borderline negligent IMO.

I was aloowed home at that age too alone, but It was my home. I knew where I was ...Totally different

I don't see the big deal...I work in the city and teach kids this age. They all know how to manuever around mass transit on their own, and have been doing so for a year or more

Re: I saw this on a blog - I thought I was laid back, but not THIS laid back!!!

I think, as some pp said, if you knew your child was mature enough and had been to the place before (not leave him somewhere he's never been), then it's okay.

I grew up in the city and I clearly remember going to work with my father one day when we had off from school (I had been there many times before) and I was whining that I was bored. I was probably the same age. My father handed me a token (no metrocards yet), a few bucks and said "okay, then go home". So I did and I was fine. we took the subway everywhere so I was used to it. Not to say that my mom was not LIVID with my father for doing it, but I got home fine.

The thing I do have issue with is not trusting him with a cell phone. If you can't trust your kid to not lose a cell phone, then, no, you should not trust him to get home by himself.

I do think it is a different story for kids living in the city. Taking the subway is almost like riding your bike somewhere in the suburbs. It's just how people get around.

I'm not so shocked by it.

Well, it is my point

Yes, some kids in my class have said they find places on their own using mass transit. They have been places their parents have not been with them and manuever around without being shown how. If I talked about this article with my class they all would have said the same thing...Big deal I do that all the time.

Still dont think the two compare.

They are taught how to at least use the system. Im sure many of them have phones and access to contact someone if they need to and there is not a city full of 9 yr olds taking mass transit....

eta- I think its her Blaize attitude in the blog that irritates me more.

Sure it can be done, but why take willing chances? IMO there are safer ways to teach independance AND while I try not to judge others parenting, I see by the responses that Im not alone in thinking hers was kinda stupid.

She gave him a map. From the story it sounds like they live on the west side. I'm SURE he has used the same route with his parents plenty of times. I mean, he's 9 years old not 9 months! I'm sure he doesn't travel around obliviously. The city is not THAT difficult to get around! I mean...you live there, you know where things are. My 20 month old son knows my neighborhood already and where all the parks are Chat Icon. It's not like she brought him to another state. Or blind folded him, spun him around 3 times and said "now find your way home."

I think our society is so over-protective nowadays that a story like this seems like crazy-talk, when in fact children of this age can be independent. I am definitely one of the over-protective as Bella will be locked in her room until she is 25 and unable to navigate mass transit or wear slutty clothes.
