Re: I think I have a cavity
It's perfectly safe to go to the dentist in your 2nd trimester. I had a cavity filled during this time. Just make sure they use novocaine without epinephrine.

Re: I think I have a cavity
I am sorry you have a toothache.
I am a dental assistant for 10 yrs now and just wanted to let you know that it is perfectly fine to go get it filled. you just cant have any sweet air (nitrous oxide) and you have to have novacaine with no epi. otherwise, all OBs will approve a dental appt.
better to have to taken care of now before it becomes larger!
feel better

Re: I think I have a cavity
I even had a wisdom tooth pulled while I was pregnant and my OB told me NOT to put myself through the pain while I was pregnant, to add to stress and all, especially if a tooth were to get absessed and have an infection -- he said it was safe to go.

Re: I think I have a cavity
One of my good friends had to have a root canal in her first trimester. The MDs felt it was risker to NOT take care of the tooth and potential infection in her mouth.
She's in her second trimester and doing well now.
Talk to your MD, see what she says.

As a dental hygienist I agree with this totally. Don't avoid something or else it will turn into a real problem later on.........

Re: I think I have a cavity
I felt the same way about going to the dentist. I had an appointment for a cleaning and wasn't sure if I should go during my 1st Trimester. I called the doctor and the dentist they said it would be fine. My Ob said and if they find something wrong, she listed a number of safe ways to approach things. They said its very important to have your teeth cleaned and checked while pregnant.

Re: I think I have a cavity
i had a root canal at 13 weeks, my OB said it was fine.
ETS: Ob said the amount of radiation is minimal and if you wear the lead apron, it's fine.
