I think I have flames coming out of my ears I am so furious!
So my son goes to camp this morning and they went on a field trip to CMEE in Bridgehampton (about a 1/2 hr ride on the highway from here) and after I pick him up on the way home he tells me...
there weren't enough seat belts in the van so most of the kids didn't have them on....
on the way there they had 2 belts and on the way home in a different van they had 3 belts   They had 2 vans with 9 - 7 years old with no seat belts ... I AM FURIOUS!!!!! How could they do that!!!! So I called the camp director as soon as I got home and I'm waiting for him to call me back or I am finding him tomorrow at camp....
When I brought this up to my father he said that the vans need to be DOT inspected because they are transporting kids and the drivers need to have CDL licenses so now I need to check on that too.

By law are kids required to wear their seatbelts on the bus? I remember when i was in elementary school and taking the bus I never wore my seatbelt.

They weren't on a bus, they were in a 12 passenger van

Disgraceful especially with all the nut jobs driving around out here in the summer. glad he was able to tell you. I would rip the camp director a new one there is no excuse for this. Leave them at the camp if they cannot transport them to the CMEE safely.

I'm curious about what the rule is...and if it's different for a van and a bus. I'm thinking I heard that on a bus they don't have to wear seatbelts because if there was an accident, it would be too hard to get the kids out???? Does that sound right???? And would that apply to the 12 passenger van? No clue, but interested.

that's what I'm in the process of finding out now.... not sure what the law is.. my husband was checking with his friend that is a State Trooper and my Dad is checking with his DOT inspector...
I would think regardless.. if you have kids in a van in Hamptons traffic.. they NEED to be belted.

The Camp director called me back and totally dismissed it.. he said there "Should" be seat belts, and there is something weird that they do with the seats so that the belts aren't accessible  whatever that means.. and that he would check and get back to me  NOT an acceptable explanation and NO solution.... Now I'm at a loss.

When is the next trip for camp???I would make a huge stink before he got back on those vans. With the money you pay for camp they should be able to hire someone to go onto the camps and pull the belts out of the seats....and the counselors should check to make sure they are on each child.

Oh believe me he is not going ANYWHERE on those vans until I know they are wearing belts
