I think it is just plain old cruel to make woman work until their due date
Which is exactly what has happened to me.
I had always planned on going out at 38 weeks and my doctor seemed to give every indication that this would be fine and my disability policy would allow it.
Until 38 weeks came and my disability policy is denying it because there is no valid medical reason.
Thankfully my boss is letting me work from home so this isn't necessarily a complaint on my situation because I am being accomodated to make the best of the situation without losing pay.
BUT, I am seriously exhausted, i can't walk for more than a minute without my entire area down there feeling like it is going to fall out, my feet are swollen like crazy, my back hurts, I have cramping and I'm just plain old feeling so spent all the time. Driving kind of stinks too (and forget about it for those of you ladies who commute). I have to pee every 4 minutes. Oh, and my job is extremely stressful, I've worked no less than 80 hours per week consistantly for the last 2 months. Yet my BP is normal so my doctor can't use medical stress as a reason because apparently BP is the only indication they can use medically. Not the insomnia and lack of sleep, or the crying fits or the vomiting I get when I'm up at 2am working because I"m stressed. None of that counts.
I'm not sure who in their right mind thinks it is a good idea to make us work this long. Give a mom a break. What are we supposed to leave work and go straight to the hospital to deliver? Apparently that is how my policy thinks. Meanies!
OK, vent over.
I gotta get back to work

I worked until 42 weeks with my last pregnancy, so I hear you. Sadly, I don't think that it is that common to be able to leave before 40 weeks. If I wanted to, I would have had to use up some of my leave and I wanted every minute when the baby was born.

Not sure if this is a good enough reason, but my boss did something to upset me the day of an appoint (36) and my b/p spiked b/c I was so mad. They wrote me the letter for that day. It was good since I gave birth at 37.5 weeks

Re: I think it is just plain old cruel to make woman work until their due date
I worked up until the end last time and for some reason I don't remember feeling this way. I guess this time around we're in peak season at work plus I have another child to take care of.
It doesn't seem that uncommon for woman to work to the end at all and I don't think my situation is unique. What I'm saying is that I think it is cruel! Not just for me but for anyone. Being this pregnant is no joke!
The state of NJ lets you out at 36 weeks no questions asked. But you only get state pay ($550 per week). The reason I'm getting a hard time is because my disability policy also would be required to give me full pay. So I get why they can't have every woman go out at 36 weeks. Still, can I at least have 1 day off to rest? Just one?

You are so right. Maternity leave in this country is a disgrace.

I totally agree with you! I worked right up till the day I delivered with both DD#1 and DD#2 and will be doing so with this baby too. Although as much as it stinks, I'd rather have the time after the baby is born than before. I don't want to lose out on that time. Maternity leave in this country is totally awful.
