I think Nina is pigeon-toed

I've been noticing for a few weeks that she is tripping a lot lately when she walks. I just brushed it off to being little and clumsy but now today my MIL and my mom both noticed how she keeps tripping over her left foot. It turns in when she walks and catches her right heel. Im so upset. I googled it and I know it really is nothing serious but she keeps getting hurt and Im scared to let her walk now.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Any advice. I know I have to give her ped a call on Monday but I don't want them to just tell me "she will grow out of it" Am I supposed to watch her fall until she does?

TIA

Please don't get upset. All kids go through this. DS is falling all the time. If I looked at his feet all day I'd go mad. (And yes, some family has brought up the possibility that he walks 'funny')

Just call the dr on Monday and put your mind at ease. Chat Icon

Re: I think Nina is pigeon-toed

DD#1 was was diagnosed around 2 with a rotation at the hip and knee on one leg. She too had been falling alot and actually got stitches in her forhead after one fall where she just tripped over her own feet. The answer is that will do nothing. She will outgrow it, my DD did. They said that they have found that the braces are not effective. By the age of 8 the kids that wear them and the kids that do not wind up in the same place. As the bones grow, they tend to straighten.
They gave me this advice, keep her barefoot.(as much as possible) The weight of her shoes will make her "toe in" even more because it is a weakness.
And do not let her "W" sit.
Feel free to FM me with any ?'s

Re: I think Nina is pigeon-toed

We noticed the same exact thing with Kaydyn. She isn't falling alot but she does trip and catch herself quite often. I mentioned it to the ped at her last visit and she said they really don't do anything for it...they wait and see if they grow out of it.

I would call the ped and just ease your mind. Maybe they will offer some different advice.

Re: I think Nina is pigeon-toed

Did you talk to your ped about this? He says its very common for toddlers to do this when they start walking.... I thought Cailen was pigeon toed last year (when he was Nina's age) for the same reason, and it all fixed itself from regular practice. Walking is like any sport - it needs to be practiced in order for them to learn how to be most efficient - where to put the feet, toes, etc.... Chat Icon

Re: I think Nina is pigeon-toed

We had the same problem with Ava and the answer was that she'll grow out of it. It's just a normal part of their development. And to be honest, my mother and aunts and grandmother didn't believe meChat Icon I had to show them articles and what not to prove to them that they no longer put kids in a brace to take care of the problem. And it did correct itself, so I wouldn't be worried, just keep an eye on it and maybe give a call to the doctor if she doesn't outgrow it in a few years.
